bc898t or my cable

hello everyone .....i purchased a bc898t from someone on ebay ...i think the radio itself is fine...i have the demo version of butels arc898 i like the software.....i went to rs and purchased this gigaware cable it has a serial conn.on one end and a usb on the other and a black box near the serial end......i think this might be the culprit... so can any body tell me what is the cable i need is or adapter i need (i do not have a serial port on my deskstop pc)...thank you all in advance

The BC898T remote control port uses a standard RS232C interface. Your gigaware cable should work.

Did you install the driver from the CD that came with your cable?

Did you set the com port number?

Did you set the baud rate?

Did you put the radio into RMT mode?

And most importantly, what operating system is your PC using? If it's Windows 8 or 8.1, there are chipset issues that need to be carefully addressed. We have some of this information linked at the bottom of this article from our wiki (all links are in blue)

ID Tracker III is a good freeware software to use with that radio. It's not as fancy as the Butel software but it does the job.
