This scanner appears to be made for "daytime" use only...... There is no lighted keypad so I can't see how useful this scanner would be at night mounted in a car or at a nighttime event.... Some design choices just don't make any sense at all.. I would just skip this one all together until they get it right and release an updated 396 with all the bells and whistles. The size of a 396 is a perfect fit for a vent clip for mounting in a car. The 396 should have been updated and released again with P25 Phase 2 capabilities added. It Make no sense to try to keep inventing the wheel as the result will most likely be complete design failure as in this case..... Just my opinion.

I use mine the car a lot. I don't use a power cable or a speaker. There are times a speaker would be very helpful. It works well but I do change batteries about every 5 hours. But overall I like it a lot.

The low end scanners never had a backlit keypad (save the BR330T). I guess they carried that over to the mid tier line portable.
