I've been thinking of buying this BCD325P2 Uniden scanner. I run Linux so hopefully I can still program it with the software you guys use.

I will be listening from home sometimes but mostly for the car. I read that the antenna doesn't get very good reception.

Can someone recommend a good antenna? (Bay Area, California) if that helps any.

Nope. You'll need something that can run Windows, but a cheap netbook will work.

The metal body of the car blocks signals from outside, so an exterior antenna is best. Install an NMO mount in your vehicle, and then you can attach your choice of antenna to the mount. The best antenna depends on the frequency range(s) you want to hear.

I second the Larsen Tri-band. Works great for the frequencies in use in the Bay Area. I bought the newer 150/450/758 version. It works better with our local 700mhz trunked systems.

I use my 325P2 in the car and it works great. I am also a ham so I just use my Dual band antenna for reception. What you want to listen to should determine what antenna you end up using. Let us know what systems or frequency ranges you want to listen to. Also, I use a vent mounted cell phone holder to hold the 325P2 in place
