Hiya All ----
I first installed the UASD software on one computer, registered it, and it works just fine with the radio.

I have just tried to put the software on my notebook computer, went through all the same processes, and when I try to read the radio, I keep getting a strange error that is...

"THIS SCANNER MODEL NOT SUPPORTED"

Anyone else ever had this wierd problem. It should be working fine, but it does not.

Any help appreciated....Regards...Bob

Obvious question first: did you re-download the correct version of UASD?

Also, check the Com port settings in the software and laptop to make sure everything matches.

Well, finally got it working. I did a complete reload of the software, and never really did see why the software was giving the strange error that it was....
All is OK now, thanks for the feedback. It was strange since the other computer was working flawlessly.

I'm having a problem along the lines of what you are mentioning here. The problem is- my computer has no serial port. It only has USB and Firewire. I bought a USB-DB9 serial adapter, and plugged the scanner into the USB port. I try to get the software to recognize the scanner, and it tells me, "COM 1 is not available. It may be in use by another program.", or something along those lines.

I go into UASD options to choose my port, and it only shows a "COM 3" port. Nothing about USB.

What should I do? I've been trying to figure out which ports on my computer are COM 1 and 3, but I've found nothing so far.

USB won't be an option since UASD doesn't support it. Did you try COM 3? If so, does it work? If not, go to Windows Device Manager and see what port the converter is assigned to and then match UASD to that one. You might also want to check that you have the latest drivers installed for the converter.

First off what operating system are you using? Go to control panel, system, Hardware tab, device manager, go down and clice the small x at the line Ports ( Com & Lpt ). Here you will find a list of all the ports on your computer. You should have one that says USB to Serial. What ever port is listed is the one for your serial converter.

USB Problem

I would try looking in Control Panel/system/hardware/device list. Open the area under USB devices and find your USB adapter that you installed. Right click on it and open properties and find out what com port it thinks it is. Most USB driver software assign the USB device a com port number for communication. If there is a red 'X' or yellow "!" beside it then it is not functioning correctly and you need to address that issue before trying to use it.

Hope this helps.

I am using Windows XP. I checked in device manager, and there is no spot for line ports. I have USB and IEEE 1394. I went into USB, and found the USB to Serial. It shows it as being in "Location 0".

And as far as using COM 3, my computer doesn't have a COM 3. I only have USB and Firewire. And the only port UASD lets me select is COM 3.

The USB-DB9 converter is supposed to give you a virtual COM port. If one isn't listed in the Device Manager then it's probably not installed properly.

UASD apparently thinks COM3 is available. Did you try it?

It's just a cable that plugs into the USB port. The scanner cable plugs into the female end of the USB-DB9 cable.

Yep, I tried it. It says something to the effect of, "COM3 not found."

I went into the configuration file, and changed the COM setting multiple times, inserting as many port names as I could find in Device Manager. Nothing worked. I'm going to try uninstalling it and reinstalling it.

DON'T assign port numbers!

Go to the adapter's web site, download the latest driver and install it. (Who's the adapter manufacturer? Aten drivers are notoriously useless.)

A USB->serial adapter shows up in software (like UASD) as a serial port. The number (the x in COMx) is assigned by Windows. It shows up in Device Manager under Ports ( Com & Lpt ).

Listen to what everyone is telling you - they've been through it and gotten theirs working, so they know what they're talking about. Make use of their hard-won experience.
