BCD396T - Air Band Volume

I've noticed that the volume on the aviation band (118-136) is about half as loud as all the frequencies. Turning the AGC off or on doesn't seem to help. Anyone else notice this? Any solutions?

Are you sure it isn't the people trasmitting in low volume? This happens quite often.

Yes - it's all the ground stations and the planes. All my other scanners work normally on the aviation band.

Check your other frequencies for being in NFM mode (AUTO defaults to this just about everywhere). NFM will make FM signals artificially more loud. That makes all other modes sound soft by comparison (by a factor of about 50%). Program FM systems to FM, not NFM. Only use NFM for NFM frequencies.

Err...Joe, not to belaber the obvious, but the mode in the 108-137 Mhz band is usually AM, not FM...are you saying that the AUTO setting doesn't default correctly? :?:

No. I think he's saying that if you have all FM freqs entered as NFM, you will soon be accustomed to the higher volume. So when you hear a relatively infrequent AM tx, you'll think it's quiet.

Air Band Volume

I reprogrammed all my FM frequencies as FM. It did seem to even things out some with the air band volume compared to other channels. I'm satisfied with how it's working now.

BTW, AM does sound a bit quieter. I have to crank the volume up almost half way on my 780XLTs to hear AM at a comparable volume to everything else, with the exception of a federal airport--that one booms!

Mike, read Wolter's post. He said it perfectly.

I did say to "check your other frequencies" (bold added for emphasis).

The issue is the RELATIVE volume, not the volume of the AM mode itself.
