Where is that 'zero' added? Must have missed that.

Is it leading or trailing?

Ampulman:

After applying the ESN_Loader update you access your BCD396T's ESN (which is different from the physical serial number) by:

MENU --> Settings --> See Scanner Info --> Firmware Version

These values are also displayed on your computer at the end of the ESN_Loader update process.

You enter the last 9 digits of the ESN (the first 5 are always the same, so we've filled that out already) and the 3-digit/letter checksum. Once you do that, when you return to your "All My Scanners" page you'll see a link to "Get Registration Key."

The extra "0" only applies to the BCD996T.

To keep everyone on the same page, it would be very helpful if posters would always mention which scanner they are discussing (since each scanner has a slightly different process). I happen to know that 328Z means the 396, but I'd bet that I'm in the minority, there.

Firmware update fails

Okay, I must be messing up something but for the life of me, I can't figure out what. I'm trying to update the firmware in my BCD996T to enable the ESN readout.

I've downloaded and installed the VUP 2.0.0.3, no problems reported by the computer. I downloaded and unzipped the firmware update v 1_04_12. When I run the updater program and try to apply the update, I get a communications error.

The scanner is hooked to COM port 1 on my computer using the db-9 connector on the rear of the scanner. The baud rate is set to 57600 on both the scanner's rear connector and the computer. The cable is a null-modem cable and other programs can communicate with the scanner with no problems. Nothing else is trying to using the com port. I have download and installed the VUP program twice and the firmware update three times.

When I apply power to the scanner while holding down the L/O and '6' keys, the screen is blank. The instructions don't say if it is supposed to be or not.

I would be grateful for any help I can get.

Jack:

You must use the scanner's front connector for firmware updates.

Maplebear:

Just reapply the update. If the ESN_Loader complains that the update has already been applied, update your registration info with the ESN and checksum reported by ESN Loader, get a registration key, then apply the V2 update.

Here is a condensed version of the overall update process. This will be included in the UPDate going out today.

The general steps to apply the update are:

  1. Register your scanner (you don't need to enter the ESN/Checksum, yet).
  2. For the BCD396T, download and install ESN_Loader. For the BCD996T, download and install BC_VUP 2.0.0.3 and download and uncompress the V1.04.12 update.
  3. For the BCD396T, run the ESN_Loader application and follow the on-screen instructions. For the BCD996T, run the BC_VUP application, select the V1.04.12 update when prompted, then follow the on-screen instructions
  4. For either scanner, navigate in its menu to MENU --> Settings --> See Scanner Info --> Firmware Version and make a note of your scanner's ESN and 3-digit/letter checksum.
  5. Update the registration information for your scanner with the ESN and checksum.
  6. On your "All My Scanners" page, click the link for "Get Registration Key" then select the "Get Key" button on the window that opens.
  7. Download the V2 update by selecting the link on your "All My Scanners" page then unzip it to a folder on your PC.
  8. Apply the update to your scanner using BC_VUP, entering that scanner's registration key when prompted.

To begin with, I have updated my 396 and apart from a little hiccup with the esn/checksum part, I had no problems and I think it sounds much better.
UPMan, just a few suggestions.
Not everyone has a propper grasp of the English language (either spoken or written).
Not everyone is as adept at using a confuser, sorry, a computer.
My 396 instruction book might as well have been written in Chinese.
Uniden's instructions have to be made simpler and clearer, maybe a visual aid at each step, the esn/checksum is a point in question. Alot of people stumbled there.

It will soon be 24hrs since these updates were made available, and you can read the frustrations in some of the posts in this forum.

One download.
Step by step instructions with visual aids.
Clear, simple, concise.

What a cluster ****! Could you have made it anymore difficult or confusing with three trillion steps. Where is the loader downloaded from?

RE: Firmware Update failed

Thanks UpMan,

Both firmware updates have now been applied and everything is working fine now. I must have missed where it said to use only the front connector on the scanner. Once I disconnected the rear cable and plugged in the front, everything went well.

Thanks again and don't pay any attention to the nay-sayers.

Having trouble with the update from version 1.03.11, also only see the SN number and not check sum number..

What version of BC_VUP do i use? My radio is registered.

I don't know why this one is giving me a skull cramp??

I'm trying to do the update but it keeps telling me, and I am quoting here, that there is a "Sirial Port Open Error!" Apparently, someone didn't know how to spell "serial." Anyway, the only thing I can think of that would be a problem is the fact that I'm having to use a USB to serial adapter since NONE of my PCs have serial ports on them...why manufacturers are so slow to change from serial to USB is beyond me.

Anyone have any ideas on how to update my 396?

When you are in the upgrade window it gives you a com choice look for it and find the right com port. Mine was com 6 and I am using a usb connection .

Updated 996

I was able to download and update my 996 last night with no problems. Downloads a little slow off Unidens website but everything went smooth. Thanks UpMan for your help and patience.

Actually, that wasn't the problem. I tried a radical approach that has probably never been done before, but it worked great. I updated the driver for my Belkin USB-serial adapter. LOL!!
