I installed the update to the 396 and now would like to do the 996.
Having trouble with the update from version 1.03.11, also only see the SN number and not check sum number..

What version of BC_VUP do i use? My radio is registered.

I don't know why this one is giving me a skull cramp??

Please help!!!

In order to see the checksum, you need to first apply the 1.04.12 update. Check out the very first post in this thread for an outline of the update process (I amended it this morning).

Well, I managed to do the firmware update with the checksum thing...now a new problem has arisen. When I try to update my information on Uniden's website, it tells me there's a checksum error....even though all information entered is correct.

What a pain in the backside.

Stephen: You should only be entering the last 9 digits of the ESN and the 3-digit/letter checksum. Double-check for a typo (that is why we added a checksum...to prevent typos from causing valid but incorrect keys being generated).

ov1: Since you are not making a major version update (you are going from V1.x to V1.x), you do not yet need a registration key.

All: Please be sure to indicate which scanner you are trying to update when you ask a question.

I'm trying to update my 996, I have the BC_VUP 2.0.03 update as well I have BCD996T_V1_12.scn , I open the BC-VUP program then open the V1_12.scn it asks to make sure u have a registration key at this point? I'm missing a step in this process?

To give us time to tweak things, we decided to hold of on the "hard launch" until today. All of you who signed up for firmware update info will be getting UPMan's Update shortly. Expect a new flood of folks giving it a go.

(Please be kind...)

Thanks

The instructions given on the Uniden website are flawless. Also consider downloading the instruction files and read them before trying to install. I converted two 396Ts last night without incident. It wasn't difficult and went quite smoothly.

I updated my 996 at 10:20 last night after getting home... Downloaded and installed both revs. including the trips back to the web site to register the ESN etc etc. Took 40 minutes in total and I have a running system. Digital volume is much more consistant, VERY little to no motorboating. The squelch only changes numbers when it becomes active and the volume indicator is nice but I don't consider it a necessity. Now, if only somone can talk Manchester and Nashua NH into actually transmitting with more then Walkie Talkie power levels I will be in heaven. As an additional comment, I still have to say the upgrade process was made more convoluted then was apparently necessity, I am sure for reasons that will probably become clear and potentially unappreciated in the future, but the upgrade works and is easy to do if you just read and comprehend instructions.

Once again thanks to UPMan for your patience through all this.

Well, I did the upgrade, got my ESN and tried to register it.

No problem with the 1.2 upgrade though it took one heck of a long time (about 15 minutes just for update 3 of 3.

As I live in VA, STARS reception seems better, but I really haven't had a chance to check it out and when I do, I'll post on the other thread for issues on the upgrade.

My comments here are on the "registration" process. I don't have a problem with the serial number and ESN values. But what the @#%$# is Uniden asking for a 'VALID NICKNAME'? I won't repeat what I entered, but let us just say any text will work as a "VALID NICKNAME".

Shoot, I can even understand, but don't have, the date or place of purchase. Well I know I got it from Glen and Scanners Unlimited, but forget when. One of the first ones out I know that. I definately don't use the scanner anywhere near where it was purchased.

Come on Uniden take a long hard look at what you really need and what is just extraneous El Torro Poopoo and remove a few astrisks from the registration page. Especially seeing it does not indicate "proof of purchase".

The nickname is for your convenience. If you have multiple units registered, it seemed a better way for you to keep track of which was which than to have you need to open the battery compartment for the SN.

Success + Suggestion

Success:

I have updated 2 BCD396Ts and one BCD996T with absolutely no trouble.

The secret seems to be to follow Uniden's directions exactly as they appear. Do the steps in order, do whatever the popup boxes say before closing them, and most important, don't try to outthink Uniden. Just do what they say.

Suggestion:

It would be useful to indicate that the updates to the BCD996T need to be applied through the front serial port.

You don't need a key to go from 1.x to 1.x.

The process of updating from 1.X to 1.X is abit confusing, during the process the Update program asks for registration key, which at this point u don't need one? Just proceed without it. U need it at the nxt update to 2.0.0.3.
This is where it got confusing to me..
Updates applied to 396/996 now !!!
Cheers,

I've got three (3) 996 scanners. Will I have to register all three (3) separately, or would whatever I download for the one I have registered work with the remaining two (2) unregistered ones?

One of those is mounted in my fire mobile, and will generally be a pain to remove to see the numbers on the back.

I'm a lazy guy at heart too.

Thanks!

You can use the same download for all three. However, you'll need to have a seperate registration key for each to complete the V2 update. You can see the ESN/ESN Checksum after applyint the first update in the scanner's menu (no need to remove it from the dash).

UPMan answered that one earlier, the same download can be used but the ESN and Checksum will be different so the auth key will be different. The information is available from the front display (scanner info/ firmware info) when the update 1.xx is loaded, you shouldn't have to remove it, just have front panel and cable access to the front for the data hookup.
