I just got a BCD396T and is there a way to change the display from showing just the group and the freq to the group freq and name.

I think you mean...FUNC + 5 (while on that channel)
To change the display so the channel and frequency or
Talk Group ID appear instead of the alpha tag (or vice versa) ,
press FUNC + 5.
that will only toggle between the two options.. you cant see everything at once
