I did have the ver: 1.09.0 upgraded to 1.11.03 and it took care of the Edacs beeps and helped the AGC work better on the 396. Now im NOT going any further because it works fantastic on the few users here in the Chicago area on Starcom 700/800 digital decoding....And "YES", the RS models work flawless on the 800 part of the Starcom digital, its just to bad they don't trunk 700 but do it conventional fine....

I upgraded the firmware on a 396 and found that I could no longer trunk, at all, an EDACS system local to me.

I have upgraded to the new 1.13.17 as well and found that I am having problems scanning and receiving the Astro digital systems (3600 Baud). On my Pro 96 I can scan this same system just fine, in fact, the Pro96 can scan this system anywhere in the valley flawlessly. Any ideas on why this is ?

Hi Jambo,

Before you give up, try this....

0. First, go into Program Systems and set this particular Apco25 system into MANUAL P25 decode.

1. Go back to scanning this system, and find a talk group that is fairly busy.

2. Hold this talk group

3. Activate the P25 decode adjustment screen
-FUNCTION KEY + Volume (Twice) for 396. FUNCTION KNOB + Light Knob (Press once) for 996.

4. Keep your eye on the ERR (short for Error) value. You'll notice that it will jump around a bit. The optimum value is 0.

5. Now, if you turn the Knob you will effectively change the decode rate of the unit. You'll see the ERR value either go up or go down. Focus on the ERR value.
-Alot can affect the ERR
a. Signal strength
b. Competing Noise
c. Antenna.....etc.....

Turn the Knob to the left and watch the ERR spike up, and then turn it the otherway and you'll get the same thing. From this you'll get a good idea of the center decode level. Settle on a 'Level' value and watch it for a minute or two, and repeat the adjusment to your satisfaction. Remember you want a low ERR.

6. Once your satisfied write down the chosen level for future reference.

7. finally, go back to the systems settings and set the P25 to Auto. With the unit set to Auto decode, it will continually adjust the decode rate in an attempt to bring the ERR
down to 0, but it will start at the level you set above. Which you've proven to yourself was already close to 0.

Side Note: In my observations, the scale should have centered at '0' (-8, -7, -6.....-1, 0, +1,......+6, +7, +8) for the default rate. Instead of incremental values from 0-16, with a default of '8' (going from memory here).

I found that for each P25 system, I had to manually optimize the P25 decode rate. I use to have a Pro96 too, and prefer the 396/996 overall. These adjustments provide much more user control.

Register

I am sick and tired of companies demanding I "register" and provide personal information to get service (sic) from them. This is especially true for firmware updates that are worthless to anyone who does not own the product.

I don't want to be "notified" about the latest products or other extraneous El Toro Poopoo that may be 'provided'. I get enough SPAM without self inflicting the ability to get more.

I'll register, but it is definately under protest. I need one of the 'fixes', hopefully it won't screw up the rest of the program.

Just one more case of where we see "customer service" are an oxymoron to business.

Hidden Firmware Display Keys

Actually, there are 6 hidden menus to do this on the 396...

'2 + 5 + 9' or '2 + 6 + 8' or '2 + 6 + 9' or '3 + 5 + 8' or '3 + 5 + 9' or '3 + 6 + 8' when powering-up will display your current firmware version.

Why do it the easy way when you can do it the hard way? :) :) :)

do you know what the other hidden menus are?

ALSO the brand new scanner preloaded w/ 1.13.17 really stinks... ONCE AGAIN it's that audio differential between analog and digital so now what should I do- roll it back or tweek the audio.... I haven't flashed my 996 and it still has 1.02.01 but sometimes it annoyingly takes a few seconds to decode digital transmissions whereas the 396 doesn't have that issue... I'm thinking that if I roll it back it will start giving me digital noise at the begining of the Xmissiion so for now I'm gonna search on here for some users AGC settings and see how that works.

Awful Machine Gunning Noise!!

Well, it's been awhile with the latest firmware update for the BCD396T. In the beginning, I didn't really notice some problems - but that was because there wasn't as much digital back then. The past 2 weeks, i've had multiple P25 talkgroups come online on two different TRS's. http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&sid=1318

The most annoyance with the BCD396T - The Machine Gunning noise prior to almost every P25 transmission!

I don't have this on the RS PRO-96, 2096, or even with the BCD996T! With multiple departments now using P25 on a regular basis - it is becoming annoying to listen to them with the 396T. Uniden - Please fix this problem!!! I love your products, but this has become a huge pet peeve!

Amen! They really do need to fix this problem! Maybe if they could offer the option of making TGs digital only, like on the 996, that would fix the problem.

I dont have that problem on p25 standard only systems.

It is very bad on 3600bps mII systems with p25 talkgroups though.

I suppose you've optimized your P25 thresholds after your update....did you?

Just a thought...

Good luck!

FYI, the scanner I just bought 3 days ago from Communications Electronics Inc already has the new firmware version installed.

scroll back a bit to find my complete report on latest firmware, it does make motorboating worse and even adds the new phone pulsing kind of sound issue when signal strength is low or fluxuating a lot (example driving). Not refering to signal dropouts, just refering to the scanner having such a high ERR rate cause it is completely unsable to compensate for a weaker signal, unlike previous firmware which worked much better.

I wish the tuning allowed further custom settings though. I mean how can you honestly tune a system that is usually 1.37 1.60 1.80 properly? lol
Auto 8 is 1.38 1.60 1.82 and auto 7 is 1.40 1.60 1.80, both settings motorboat almost every transmission because it always errors on the value i picked to be off by 2-3 numbers. Wish I could set it to a default of 1.38 1.60 1.80 or something like that. Not sure if codec is designed that way or not though. I also often wondered why can't systems cache last value? if it comes thorugh loud and clear once it's tuned, why on next transmission is it going to default back to auto setting instead of last known tune setting? Just thoughts. But i think the audio tuning neads more user control then just being able to select different presets.
