For my 396, I have several saved configurations on the pc. One for normal 'home' listening, one for weekday commutes, one for when I visit friends about 100 miles west, others that isolate certain agencies or systems..
So, in the various configurations, there are some systems that I can't pick up at all from where I am at that time. Why waste time scanning them? With selective configuration, they'd already be loaded. You'd just choose which config you wanted to use at that time. The other systems would still be loaded, but no time lost checking to see if a control channel could be found or a conventional signal picked up.
For somebody working between two different geographical areas, start the scanner with the systems loaded for where you are today. Tomorrow, boot it up with a different mix of systems, close call settings, etc, because you're in the alternate location 150 miles away. Without having to stop and reprogram the scanner via the pc.
This might also give you an option to set up a 'disaster' config. Heavy on FD, mutual aid, EOC's, in case of a major fire or other incident. Quicker to get that up & going via a custom config than trying to lock out the extra systems and talk groups that you have to do now to focus on one large event,
