please....do not assume I did not read the owner's manual. If I asked obviously I didn't see it. If you don't have something constructive add why waste your time? Anybody else? I know you can program the welcome screen from the software. I want to know if you can do it directly from the scanner itself since I don't have the software. Didn't see anything in the manual about that.

It can't be done without using software. This way when your scanner is stolen by a less then fine member of society, it will act as a barrier so they can't remove your name and phone number from the welcome screen without using software or the key combo to reset the scanner.

ME343 I see you edited your original reply to my question. With negative remarks you discourage new members like me from asking questions and benefiting from other people knowledge, which is what I thought these forums were for. To everyone else, thanks for your help! I appreciate it.

Go to http://www.bctool.org/index.php?s=download and download the latest version of bcTool. You'll need to connect your radio to your PC using the supplied cable. Start the software, then hit the "Connect to Radio" Icon at the top (looks like a gold and blue plug connected together). You can then change the welcome menu screen by going to the "Radio" menu at the top and choosing "Radio Settings...". Edit the data in the "Opening Message" section, then press OK. Disconnect the radio from the PC, power it down then restart it, and you should have your new message when the radio starts up.

Hope that helps.

Get BCTool and then: In bcTool go to "Radio > Radio Settings". You can change the startup screen by changing the data in the "Opening Message" section.

Never thought of doing that...is that something you guys recommend? Just name and phone number? How often are scanners stolen?

I keep track of the data I load by number and letter. (currently Ver. 14C) That gets one line of the welcome screen and the crib sheet get the same. Modification of a system gets a letter bump and addition of a system gets a number bump.

When ever a thief gets the chance to grab one, fortunately though the thieves aren't too bright and A: have no clue how to operate them B: can't reporogram them.

To the original poster, forget ARC software, for major programming updates I use Freescan because you can cut and paste (without a subscription) where BCTool can't (as of the last time I tried).

mcscanner that is a really good idea about using the welcome screen to keep track of the software you load. I found that very interesting. Is that working good for you so far?

I had a 250D with the card that was stolen out of my trunk, they also took a pair of used seekers of my wifes and all the power cords to my gps and xm, cell chargers etc.

I can assume it was a lesser then average society member and they have no idea what the radio was, is or what it can do. they huck it in the trash or pawn it.

I wish uniden came out with the radio Marking sooner, I now mark all my radios with my Call Sign name and reward info to trick the dumb ones into just giving me back my radio i never said the reward would be a lot, a pat on the back would be enough haha.

I hate thieves.

It is working well. I use ARC396 and that may have some impact on keeping data sets organized. I can create a data file for a trunked system like NE Tarrant PS or a conventional like Dallas Police. Last time I counted I think I have 24 different uniquely named data files for my area. In ARC396 I can bring any or all into a profile and give it a unique name. After I load a profile I will then update the welcome screen with the same profile name and load that too.

It does take some effort to follow a change from beginning to end to make it work effectively.

I can not get mine to work on the 396, After you change the message do you hit OK or refresh? I have tried both, wont' work. I turn it off and back on and the uniden opening message is still there. What am I doing wrong?
