Excuse my ignorance,but..Can you use alkalines with this radio and will it scan 500 MHz APCO-25 systems?? Thanks

Yes to both items.

If you do use regular alkalines, instead of rechargeable, be sure to flip the slide switch in the battery compartment to "alkaline". This will prevent the scanner from trying to 'charge' alkaline batteries if you plugged in the ac adapter.

Also, a few more questions-1. Does it use a BNC connecter? 2. How does this scanner rate as far as image rejection, comparing it with with other wide band scanners, such as for example the ICOM R5, which is quite sensitive but has a real image and adjacent channel interference problem especially on UHF. Also, if there is anyone familiar with the R5 and the BCD396T, is the 396 as sensitive as the R5 or not?? and finally 3. Why would anyone buy Radio Shacks digital scanner over the Uniden, in other words, what advantages would Radio Shacks have?? Thanks again!

1. No, an SMA connector.
2. Can't help you there.
3. Some of the Radio Shack offerings are on sale right now. (Except they don't come with rechargeable batteries, AC adapter, or PC programming cable.)

1. Comes with an adapter in the box.

3. Personal preference. I checked both out extensively and went with the Uniden BCD396T.
