When entering text with the keypad why can't you enter a period using the ( . / no ) key like my 996 and most other Uniden scanners. You have to search for it with the scroll knob. It's a very handy short-cut.

Well, now it is a really handy shortcut for entering a space. Now I don't have to hunt for the space and I use more spaces than periods. :D

You can't enter a space using ( . / no ) key. That requires ( < 4 ) or ( 6 > ) key.

When changing text, i push the ./no key and it blanks the current character. Then I press the 4 or 6. ???? If the character was already a blank then I just press the 4 or 6. It sounds like we're saying the same thing in a different way.

You are correct for "changing" text. I was asking about "entering" text. On my 996 you press ( . / no ) twice to do what you are saying, but it doesn't work that way on the 396xt.

OK. Gotcha. I was just altering a label on a channel and was quite happy when I discovered the easy way to enter a space.
