When I turn the squelch up all the way it doesn't make a noise when you get it turned up so high like my other scanners. Should it make a static noise , then you back it off till the noise stops. Thanks Frank

If you are monitoring either a trunked system or a conventional channel that has a DCS or CTCSS applied, no. The audio path is controlled by additional factors in that case.

The squelch should work fine on plain ol' conventional channels. For example, set up a test system of several railroad or air or commercial frequencies, and then adjust your squelch. Does it work on those?

I mean that trunked radio systems use control messages to control whether the speaker path opens in addition to the signal strength. If the signal is there, but the control message hasn't been sent, the speaker will remain silent.

I mean that a conventional channel programmed with a CTCSS or DCS tone will not open the speaker path unless a signal is present with a matching tone.
