I measured my 436's current consumption from the USB connector without any batteries installed. A 436 requires 200mA at max volume with white noise. While scanning or stationary on a frequency it takes 150mA. If the display light are turned off it takes 125mA from the USB connector. Using battery save mode in a stationary channel with no carrier received will after a while, some 30 sec, start to switch off the receiver in a pumping fashion reducing current to 100mA when the receiver are turned off but over time the average are 110mA, with no display backlight.

The average NiMH's are probably between 2000mAH and 2500mAH so would in worst case last 10 hours with a full charge and usually 15 hours or more of normal use.

do you happen to know how much additional drain is caused by the display light being on?

Plus that's obviously a French Wal-Mart* if its a "Supercentre".

Or perhaps that's just one of the fancier ones. Either way it doesn't count.

Whether the cells are 2500 mAH or 1500mAH you should get far more than 10 minutes of operation. 1500 mAH cells will get about 60% of the time 2500 mAH cells will. If the cells are not hot after that 10 minutes the issue is that there was no charge in them. Check the charger for proper operation. Remember that the BCD426HP will NOT charge the cells when in operation. It is USE or CHARGE only. If using an external charger make sure it is charging properly.

Try the cells in another device and see if they are working properly in that.

What is the starting and ending voltage the 436 is showing?

Turns out that of the 3 chargers that I have 2 of them show fully charge when in fact they are not.

Yeah, we buy stuff and it works great for years. Once it doesn't, we often fail to realize the problem thinking it's always worked so it must be something else.

Get a simple $5 battery tester with a dial that shows red-yellow-green that has a resistor to make a load of 100-200mA that will be enough to see if the needle stays in the green or slowly drops to red. I have a universal one with a movable arm to fit any battery size. It's often just one battery of a bunch that has gone bad, but as all are in series the bad one will not pass the necessary current through it.

I just got the 436 over the weekend.
Is lithium ion rechargeable recommended?
Does anyone have a link to 6~8 rechargeable batteries and an independent charger for them that they highly recommend?

This works for me. Purchased (2) different brands of rechargeable batteries (prevents mixing). Both are 2800 mah. Then I purchased the Wisblue 1865 battery charger. It analyzes / charges batteries individually. My 436 will last over 8 hrs. That's using the speaker and LED display lighting up on every transmission. I love this charger. The cost approx. $20. Everything was from Amazon. I use the trickle setting. Charges batteries to full in approx. 6 hours. You need to provide your own plug for the usb cable. Manual recommends 2.0 amp for full benefit of the charger. The brand of the batteries are EBL and HiQuick. one set in the scanner, the other in the charger. I believe they are very good batteries. They're heavier than my energizers.

Am I on the right track with these?

I've experienced this in my TRX-1, it usually is a sign that the batteries are at the end of their life and they simply won't hold a charge. I would put in a set of regular batteries just to rule out a hardware issue. I recommend at least 2500 batteries.

I didn't mean not recommend anything. Just wondering about li-ion opinion in general.
Not sure, I know they expensive. I use lithium ions in my weather station, they're really good in extreme temperatures. The Eneloops/Ikea Ladda batteries have been my go-to batteries for years. The EBL ones have worked fine, I feel like they last about the same but I don't know how long their lifespan will be. I'm still using Eneloops from 9 to 10 years ago, they're really good. Hope this helps
