Its about time for a upgrade and I am really set on the BCD436HP. Now for the question... Is a gps worth the 89 bucks? never used that kind of setup and need some feedback. My commute to work is 79 miles from Washburn county Wi to Proctor Mn.

I would say yes. But it really depends on your situation. I was commuting a shorter distance (63 miles), but across three Southern California Counties, so for me it was great not to have to fiddle with the scanner as I moved along. It might take a bit of work to get the settings the way you want it, but once it's all dialed in - you almost never notice it doing it's work.

Shop around, too. Amazon has the units, complete for about $72

IF that is all , then no. You can easily set a couple lists and / or quick keys for the commute.

Now for out of the area - worth it.

However - if I was doing it - I'd use the GPS daily.

Example - say your local ps gets noisy and useless to hear after 12 miles - set the range to match and it will lock out.

Or you only want to hear Podunk MN for 5-10 miles.

I would definitely agree with unpltd.

No, it's not worth the $35.00. All they are going to do is update the database, which you can do yourself with Sentinel, and enter your zip code. That sure is not worth 35 bucks to me. The database update needs to be done periodically anyway, depending on how much systems in your areas of interest change. Takes only a few minutes (depending on your connection speed). Entering your own zip code (for the location) is omething anyone can do as well.
