As noted above, ARC536 can handle programming for your 436HP. The cost for the Basic version of the software, about $40, supports programming, and downloads from the RadioReference database (since you are a Premium Subscriber). If you also want to use virtual control, as well as logging, then you would have to acquire the "Pro" version of ARC536, which is about $70. The program supports both the 436HP & 536HP, as well as the SDS100 & SDS200.

On the other hand, ProScan has a purchase cost of $50, but that includes programming, importing, virtual control, as well as logging & some other features. As wtp has noted, ProScan also supports a number of other scanners, in addition to the SDS & x36HP series. I use ProScan with a variety of other scanners.

Both programs allow for a 30 day free trial period, before you have to either purchase a license, or discontinue use of the software. Both also include free updates if changes are made in the software. ProScan has had quite a few updates, adding new features, or tweaking existing ones.

Regardless of whether you choose ProScan, or ARC536, you will need Sentinel, which is a free download from Uniden, Sentinel is needed to maintain & update the database in the scanner, and would be needed if &or when) any firmware updates are released. There has not been an update in quite a while, Despite vague promises that something is on the works, no firmware updates have been released in the last couple of years.

I don't know if there are any others than Sentinel, ARC and ProScan. What can be regarded as easy to use are probably up to the individual user. Sentinel is free and I think it is dead simple to use. ARC and Proscan both have test/demo mode to try out before purchase and they both have more features and options if you do complicated work like creating custom search ranges in scanlists or you do a lot of rearranging moving data around that needs the use of advanced copy and paste functions. But it doesn't sound as you will be doing that sort of advanced editing. Sentinel can also use basic cut&paste functions and probably covers most of your needs.

Programming a 436HP by hand is no easy task, even for a seasoned hobbyist. Maybe a few conventional objects here and there but a trunked radio system? forget about it!
I've programmed several systems on mine by hand. Sure it takes longer but it can be done. To each their own.

How many channels? Manually entering channel names/text tags takes time considering 40 displayed characters. It could take a few minutes per channel versus a few seconds typing in the channel names. Hopefully your scanner will not have a memory loss or need resetting.

Once I program a system, I tend to leave it the way it is.I'll check the data base on here if there are any updates. I usually don't tag the individual talkgroups since I pretty much know the numbers by sight as to which group it is. Like I said, to each their own.

To add to this, with @ProScan you can duplicate your proscan folder and run multiple instances so if you have a 436 and another supported scanner, you can run both at the same time. I have a Br330t, a 436 and an SDS200 and do this. I think @buddrousa may hold the record with 16 copies of Proscan running at the same time. All for 50 bucks..

I think I'm going to go with ProScan. I'm using the trial right now and while there's a bit of a learning curve (I'm more used to how Butel does things) ProScan is a member on here, getting support should be easy if needed. As others said it supports multiple models of Unidens, more bang for the buck. Just have to go sit down and read the manual now lol

Try programming alpha tags manually for a system with 300 talkgroups. Hello, arthritis and worn out keypad

Butel also has a trial or demo mode and Gommert are a member here on RR and gives support when asked. Some people prefers the interface that ARC gives you and others prefer ProScan or even Unidens free Sentinel software. ProScan have more functions for the very advanced user where it is even possible to edit Unidens database but it could be overwhelming for a novice user when looking at all the options and features.
