It only writes back certain state changes that have recently happened. For example, it might not keep the backlight status or some other minor function. Major things are saved when you do them (since SD cards have limited number of write cycles, we don't want to use up those write cycles on minor things).

Awesome. Thanks for the lightning fast reply! That is good to know that as long as every now and then I do a 'proper' shutdown I will have everything saved. I will probably carry a second SD card with me though, just encase. Cheap insurance.

Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the amazing work UPMan. Oh, and thank you!

I've been looking forward to Uniden releasing some new models, but I wasn't expecting some of the features they've included. Nice job Uniden!!!! Very curious to see what will be announced in March and any firmware updates that follow. I like the display, but it's a lot of info in front of you while trying to keep your eyes on the road and the days of programming on the fly are definitely over!!!

The WIFI/smart phone app feature looks very cool. I know I will make use of that. The same with the digital recording. I'm a little disappointed the tape out jack has been eliminated (for obvious reasons I know), I use it on the 996XT for a mobile repeater type setup to monitor the scanner away from my car on a portable. Since the audio provided is at tape level and not controlled by the volume switch it works excellent. Not to say I can't work around this with the ext. speaker jack provided just like the person with the "garage speaker" set up.

I have not had a chance to read through the manual yet, but is the delay function individual to the channel/talk group or for an entire system? Please say individual to the channel/talk group!!! I believe that changed between the 785 and the 996's and I never understood why.

Would like to see some programming functionality with the clock/date. Not looking for an alarm clock, but it would be cool to program some systems/groups or even individual channels/talk groups to turn on/off or unlock/lock between a certain time/date, etc. Maybe have it lock-out (or is it AVOID now?) certain channels during regular tone-test times or roll calls being the radio can get tied up for a while, etc. Just a thought because there’s probably a lot you could do there.

Last and most important question, will I be able to charge my cell phone off the USB port on the back of the radio? KIDDING, that's definitely NOT a serious question!!!!

Again, great job on the new models Uniden!!!!

Hopefully the second display mode will address the 'busy' display issue.

I too would like the option of reduced info but a much larger font for the channel alias's when driving.

Sometimes, less is more :)

i am not sure if this has been covered yet but with the wifi will you be able listen to your scanner from 2 different cell phones at the same time ?

And if i am out of town will i be able to play back the recordings the scanner has made from my phone?

Thank you for posting that link, Lindsay. Audio sounds pretty decent. My concern is how it would handle the complicated RWC in the Phoenix area. Its ability to properly decode that system would definitely be a deal-breaker for me and others in Maricopa County, more so than any of the other features. I know you're limited in what you can tell us at this point, but if hope you seriously consider having the unit tested on Phoenix's RWC. :)

Thank you!

Hi UPMan, the audio clipping in your simulcast demo beginning at 0:42:
Phase I Simul Test - YouTube

Was this audio recorded to the SD card? If so, is the audio clipping by the radio system or by the scanner? It sounds pretty nasty.

As he says in the description, the guy was eating his mic...if you're talking about what I think you are talking about.

Someone asked but there was no answer yet.

Are p25 IDs able to be decoded on conventional frequencies without the use of the " one frequency trunked " mode?

Also, why was the tuning knob on the 536 moved to the opposite side?

It is much easier on the 996 with keypad and tuning knob on the same side to go through menus and programming on the go. Almost two handed operation is required now.

This is from page 27 of the manual:
Display Unit ID – Allows you view the unit ID of the radio currently transmitting on Motorola,
EDACS, and APCO P25 systems.
On or Off
Set ID Format – Sets the ID display format for the System.
Set ID Format (Mot/P25)
Decimal Format or Hex Format. The default setting is Decimal.
Taking a quick look through the Sentinel software, I really don't see anything different, so I would have to say it doesn't look like it at this point.
