The helicopter is not set up for the tablet install. I will put a picture online to show but if not able to do a hard wire remote means a physical relocation of the scanner. Thanks for the idea.

Wait a sec - you have to relocate the scanner because there aren't wires coming out of it? That doesn't make sense.

Using tablets and smartphones exclusively to control the scanner is not the best fit for every single potential owner of the scanner.

This. The lack of a true remote head is an issue for some. Tablets are not the solution for everyone. The tablet solution keeps getting thrown around and personally I don't think that is a true solution; it is a fix. A true remote head is a solution.

To me a tablet is just another hassle to deal with. Plus I think it looks tacky in a vehicle install.
To each his own. I have my scanner installed in a custom made DIN slot in a dash pocket so it doesn't matter to me, but I completely understand people wanting a true remote head vs. a tablet.

This is the room I have to deal with. You can see the remote heads in the center and left side of the picture

What about removing a 996 or getting the handheld? Do all the 996's in the chopper have remote heads?

That must be why all the high end cars are coming with them now. When you spend 100K on a car you want "tacky".

I don't like new cars, so I might be bias here. Plus integrated into the dashboard and stuck on metal mount are two completely different things. Show me a tablet that looks like it belongs there and I might change my mind.

That's why I worked so hard to make my custom DIN pocket. It looks like my scanner is OEM equipment.

Just look on YouTube for videos from back when the iPad came out. Several people replaced their stereos with them, and some of them you can't tell from stock.

For the helo, maybe you could install them on pivots so they fold out of the way to see non-critical guages. Or, use an iPod which is about the same height. You could even get two in the place of one RH.

Here is one (not a video, but a pic from 3.5 years ago in a Tacoma)

This gives you all a better Idea of the room that I have. Now, if they came out with a RH-97 that was a WiFi unit the same size as the RH-96, well that would be neet

The four 996xt's have remotes. The radio's are closer to the center of gravity so the weight of the remote does not effect the helicopter as bad

How about a video showing how the new scanner handles a P25 simulcast system

Here you go...

Phase I Simul Test - YouTube

That audio sounds pretty daggone good for basically a copy of a copy. Reception sounded ok though this in theory could have been taken parked right next to the site tower. Lol. For a lot of us NJ folks, how it handles phase 2 will be very important. I also saw the video of the LED light. Very unique idea sticking it by the knob.

The general path I drove is in the description for the video (I was mostly mobile the entire time). It is a direct recording to the scanner's microSD card, so no copy loss.

Sorry for a possibly dumb question but what is the alpha tag limit on both scanners? Still 16 characters?
