The USB cable is just a plain-vanilla Mini USB. Interchangeable with myriad other cables you likely already have for other devices (except newer phones that use micro USB).

They say that these new radios will be available on January 15. I want one bad and I'm going to sell a bunch of other stuff to pay for it. Is there any doubt that they WILL IN FACT be available on the 15 th. I saw the video and it looks like quite a new toy. I've been watching ebay lately and I've noted that scanner sales are way down. I wonder if it has anything to do with the launch of the new Uniden's????

UPMan will I be able to use my 996XT AC plug on my BCD536 when I get one. Reason I'm asking is, I have all my wires zip tied and it's simple to just swap and plug in the new radio without have to redo the entire harness.

Shipping update from UPMan earlier in this thread...

Shipping update: First, I have to apologize for my previous estimate, it was flat-out wrong. At this point, it looks like the 536 will arrive closer to the 3rd week of January with the 436 at the end of January or beginning of February. While we are getting a few on those previous dates I gave, they are our first pilot production pieces...not large quantity (the shipping report I was referencing didn't have qty on it...I assumed the full shipment).

Judge for yourself...

It appears all the power connections are identical to the previous base/mobiles. Same BNC. Same external speaker jack. Same general placement of the connectors. So, you should be good to go.

In fact, the rear looks identical with the addition of the USB jack and the subtraction of the recording output (most likely since recording is internal now). It would have been nice to see the recording jack maintained for those who use it for non-recording purposes.

will this work off your data plan

I understand the receiver will work off your I phone app that you have to download but will it work good using no wifi ,and just using your verizion data plan , if you set it up and leave the base unit home ??? thanks .

So there is no record output only ext speaker now? Why would uniden take that out? I understand it now records to the SD card but what about the ones of us using other methods of recording

Will the headphone jack on the front just under the volume knob suit your purposes?

I could see someone wanting to use the record out for a feed or something like that, but still being able to listen to the scanner through either the speaker out or internal speaker at varying volumes. If both the rear and front outputs have their volume controled by the knob they basically one in the same but in different locations.

I'm surprised with broadcastify growing a lot and the whole feed idea with the WiFi streaming, Uniden didn't see the utility of having the record out for streaming feeds.

Your are correct both the rear and front outputs have their volume controlled by the volume knob but they are not one and the same (which you probably already know) the headphone output has dropping resistors present to dramatically reduce the volume to protect your hearing when using headphones. The speaker-out in the rear does not and I really miss that on handheld scanners but I understand why a speaker-out is not on a handheld.

The record-out jack that was removed from the back of the BCD536HP would not be effected by the volume control knob at all, so using this 3.5mm jack (modified or not) to feed other hardware was handy.

I would imagine it would be fairly trivial to add a line level output using a dropping resistor network and a jack. What would not be possible is to have only certain channels sent to that jack as was the case with previous models.

I'm not sure the built-in recording is capable of recording only certain channels. I think it's all or nothing. (there is no RECORD flag in Sentinel)

Joe, I sure missed that! I was so use to using FreeScan with my BCD996T and I own an HP-1 too. I guess you must control what is recorded by what channels you are actually scanning or listening to at the time you start the record process.

Also:

Anyone know the purpose of the three holes on the back of the BCD536HP or BCD996XT are for? There are two small holes on each side of the back and one larger hole about in the middle of the back with writing above it. I have seen people mount 3.5 mm jacks in the large middle hole (usually a discriminator tap out) but I was wondering if they might be needed for ventilation?

Ventilation would be my guess (or so pressure does not build up and crack the display if the air pressure changes). It would also provide a nice exit point for an audio cable pigtail that has a 3.5mm jack on it, don't ya think?

I imagine it would be even more trivial to do that during manufacture. I don't stream a feed, but I run audio into a mixer. I've added a line out to some GRE radios, and would prefer not to have to do it.

So for the newbie, will this scanner work for a station that has this quote....

"Some talkgroups on this system are using Project 25 Phase II TDMA modulation which can ONLY be monitored using a GRE PSR-800"

Or do I need the GRE?

thnx
