Headphone AND External Speaker Issues?
236 comments for this post that I did not fully go through, however, I have a unit that appears to have headphone hiss, BUT, I also have an external speaker issue as well as the headphone issue.
Not sure if these are all one in the same problem and will be resolved with the "repair"?
I thought? I read somewhere that the component mis-installaiton ONLY impacted the headphone audio?
So this is what I have going on, external speaker output has "noise" between the time the received comms end and the squelch actually mutes, just before scanning resumes. This "noise" is not a hiss, it appears as low level digital processor/switching noise.
This noise is not so obvious at lower volumes, but seems to get a bit louder as the volume is increased and can be rather obvious at times.
Also depends on the external speaker efficiency and frequency response. I current have a good quality Motorola external speaker connected and I can hear this problem when listening.
Seems there is either crosstalk issues or a filtering issue that needs to be addressed.
BTW, my 996XT does not exhibit this issue, but I also realized the 996XT may have a different external speaker output circuit.
If you want to check your scanner for this issue, use a set of earbuds and plug into the external speaker connection, BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE VOLUME LEVEL VERY LOW INITIALLY, maybe set the volume to 1 or 2, then bring the volume up to a level you can comfortably hear comms. You should hear the switching/digial noise at the end of comms and before the squelch fully mutes. On trunked systems it appears to stay while the system is possibly trying to follow the talk group you are monitoring.
Hopefully the incorrect component placement will resolve this external speaker issue, but in case it is a SEPARATE and DIFFERENT issue, Uniden should address BOTH of these issues at the same time.
Maybe this has already been outlined and covered in the 238 posts within this thread and if so, sorry I am covering the issue again, but if it is not covered, check your scanners for this issue.
