Has anyone else had a problem with low level static when using the external speaker plug on the 536? I believe it's the connector as it doesn't matter if I use headphones or a small external speaker, there is a small amount of constant static which is becoming annoying. If I unplug the speaker/headphones it's not there on the internal speaker.

It depends on how sensitive the external speaker/headphones are.

There is always internal hiss as the audio section in scanners are not designed very well with expensive components. Using a too sensitive speakers or headphones will reveal that hiss. Almost all headphones are too sensitive and you have to use an extension cable 3,5mm that have a volume control on it. Turn down scanners volume to zero and adjust the volume on the cable until hiss is unheard.

On an external speaker you'll could take it apart and insert a 4,7ohm resistor in series and another one over the speaker terminals. The one over the speaker terminals can be lowered in value until no hiss is heard.

Thanks for your time in replying. The static is there at the same level no matter the volume level. If I turn the volume all the way down it doesn't affect the static sound. Now the resistors are a good possibility. Can you do a quick and dirty diagram for me?

I appreciate the help.

If you're using a mini-plug cable, replace it before you start designing circuits.

Right! I misread the initial reply about volume control and thought he was talking about the volume on the scanner. A volume control on a little 3.5mm adapter is a cheap and easy thing to try. I guess i'm off to ebay.
