I added a ground loop isolator and audio improved drastically.

I guess I was lucky then. The laptop I use only has one input. It has a little microphone icon next to it.

It may be a multifunction input that can switch modes then,

For us non-radio techs, can you explain what this ground loop is and what we can do to fix it?!

This is a good product because clearly it has isolation transformers in it. Radio Shack makes a very good one as well. Do not buy any small cheap ones from Amazon that have stereo phone plugs. They have only capacitors for isolation and it is an awful design. Do your homework.

This problem probably explains why so many broadcastify feeds sound so awful. Isn't there a wiki for showing feed providers to hook up and adjust stuff correctly?

Yes, but that still requires people to read the wiki and follow its advice.
