See this document and the Adjust Audio AGC section
Easier to Read BCD996P2/XT Digital Scanner Manual

Scroll to 'Response Time' and press E/●.
This parameter determines how frequently the AGC factor updates. Decreasing this value makes AGC respond faster, but could result in "pumping." A higher value decreases the response time.

You seem like a curious hobbyist, so I would suggest you read the manual, cover to cover, a couple times like I did. Then read through every post on the forums here that contain ‘996p2’ like I did.

Then if you still have questions, come back with them but I suspect many of your basic questions will be answered.

Some of it I don't quite understand like priority settings yes or yes for priority plus and DND, which would be better to use

Again this is explained in the manual Bob (Proscan) linked & JT alluded to but I'll give you the nitty gritty. DND = Do Not Disturb which means if there's an active transmission going on while this close call mode is active then said transmission won't be interrupted or "Disturbed" in favor of a priority transmission until the scanner resumes scanning

What is the difference between dnd and priority plus, I read this part several times more than anything else

Priority DND (Do Not Disturb) scans all channels and checks priority channels every two seconds, but  not while it's receiving a signal.

Priority Plus scans  only the priority channels.

Priority scans all channels and checks priority channels every two seconds and will interrupt lower priority or non-priority channels.

With priority plus if you set quick keys will 1 overide 2 and so on

When I set quick keys it only shows 0-9 but on the manual it shows 0-99 am I missing something
Are you referring to GQKs?

Per the manual
Understanding Quick Keys
There are 100 'System/Site/Search Quick Keys' (0-99) and 10 'Group Quick Keys' (0-9).

I think that's what I'm doing wrong, for using priority plus does each channel have a quick keys are just for sites and systems

i have never used any quick keys. i just lock or unlock what i want.
i have just about every setting set to auto ar default.
and i enjoy my radio set my way.
priorities just interrupt what you are listening to, unless they are set to DND.
i also find it easier to carry another radio, or the wife has one, to avoid missing stuff.
she listens to the sheriff only( id scan), and i listen to it all(id search)
yes, you should set the radio up the way you want, but you don't have to change every setting in the radio.
the people who designed it spent some time on their settings so you would not have to.
