Ok so i am new here but not complete radio newbe. Have not really messed with scanners much so please be nice.
Bought a bearcat bcd996p2 because it claims to be plug and play with close call capture and auto store. Needless to say it is not that easy.
My first question is does anyone have a file i could shoot to it to get me started and have a base to work off of. I do have the programing software from Uniden and the cable and have been able to successfully link with it. I live in SEMO, Sikeston to be specfic. Thanks in advancefor any help you could send my way.

Further to what you’ve already discovered, the 996 is not plug and play, and close-call is only for detecting the signals being transmitted very close to the scanner.

You will need to program it for what you want (as you have discovered).

I’m retired and can help you program your scanner from your keypad on the scanner. I don’t use the software for programming because I no longer have a desk top computer and I use an iPad and iPhone. Programming from the keypad is not difficult. I can get you started. I’ll send you a private message with my contact info.

A useful web site is Mark’s easier to read scanner manual. Here is a link to the manual for the BCD996P2. It is handy to quickly look up questions.

A Quick Look reveals, that Sikeston is in both Scott and New Madrid counties, and much of that seems to be on the MOSWIN system. The data base shows the Sikeston PD "OPPS" group encrypted but the rest of that that might be of interest down that way is in the open. (Not Encrypted). It doesn't appear to be simulcast off the actual Skieston 700 tower so that scanner with a little programming there should serve you well I'd think.
I do not own the 996 scanner so I'm not sure what you would need to program that via computer. Manual programming will be tedious but I'd think you might be able to accomplish that with some help. Someone else chimed with from front panel stuff so if you have the time and patience, that should work too. Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck!

I feel sure if firedak has the software downloaded to a computer I can talk him through getting his scanner programmed by creating a file. I think programming from the keypad gives you a better understanding how the scanner functions so you are better able to enjoy the hobby. Some people want to just be able to turn the scanner on and not mess with it. I can appreciate that and can usually help folks get their scanner set up to suit their desire.

However the OP can get his scanner programmed is fine. Maybe someone can email him a programming file.

I think you are correct. That being said, even using some sort of software, people can learn how things work. When I started using Motorola Radios for ham radio I had to resign myself that on some units are only programmable via software. Coming from only front panel programming, this was a hard pill to swallow in the beginning. I found with the first "zip code? scanner I bought, that I spent. more time pressing the avoid button than listening so, I figured out quickly about the import from the data base, and do what I wanted myself. Now using Unication Pagers, there is no front panel programming and it all has to happen from either the data base or manually entering the systems on the software.
I 100% agree with however he gets it to work is fine...that's what it's all about.
