My BCD996P2 back lights are acting weird. The colors are not what they are suppose to be and some are hard to see. White is like peach blue and red can't see. Has anyone else had this problem or has open the case and are they hard to replace?

On my BCD996P2, white looks yellow and blue is so dark that you cannot read it. I've read online that reseating the ribbon cable can sometimes fix the problem. That didn't help me. I even tried a new ribbon cable with no change. Since the rest of the scanner functions properly, I can't justify spending the money to get the display color issue fixed.

Have the LED color values shifted since you purchased your BCD996P2?

I have a couple BCD436HP's purchased years apart (the oldest one shortly after the scanner was released). The oldest scanner's LEDs have the "correct" color values, i.e. "white" is white, "yellow" is yellow, etc., etc. With its younger sibling's LEDs however, "white" is distinctly purplish and "yellow" is more orangy than yellow...

did you check the intensity level setting for the leds, they can be set on low, medium, or high, check the manual on how to change them.

I have a BCD436HP also but its only white and you can't change the screen color

I keep my display as white as it is easier to read. Yeah, some of the colors make it difficult to read the display.

@kb9hgi I know exactly what you're talking about, I have a 996P2 that's probably 3yrs old that has done that also. I've also tried re-seating the ribbon cables with no luck to help this problem. I'm really not sure when it started doing this as I had it in the green setting for quite some time and it's not as noticeable on the green setting as the others, just seems a bit darker. The rest of the colors are definitely off shade and blue is so deep blue the text barely shows up. I'm really not sure if it's an led driver problem or an actual led that's went south. My old 996XT still looks normal after all these years though. I've heard of a couple others having this problem from the same time frame also but not widespread. Eventually I'll send it in for repair.

This sounds like an ageing LED problem, a combination of low quality LEDS and/or overdriving them leading to premature dimming.

The lifespan of high quality LEDS that are correctly driven should be anything from 50K (5.7 years continuous use) to 100K hours (11.4 years continuous use).

My old Maha battery charger's screen has a bright white LED display that was on continuously when plugged in (the newer model's display stays on for a few seconds when inserting batteries then powers off).

Or rather had a bright white display, after using it continuously for several years I noticed the display started to dim considerably within a short period of time. Presumably the lifespan of the LEDs was reached.

Personally I would REALLY like to know WHY....W H Y.....Uniden decided to put those UGLY DARK pastel colors with BLACK TEXT!!!!! There should be an option to choose between BG and text colors. I use green or cyan cause those colors offer better contrast, but still not easy to view. I would rather have WHITE TEXT if we have to deal with the ugly dark pastel colors. At least it would be easier to see for people like me with vision issues. Black text on a dark background makes NO SENSE.
