Hi all,

I have not really used scanners in approx 20 years. I have been using two way radios for everything. Unfortunatly, things have changed in my area and I am in need of a scanner for a few trunked systems as well as a DMR system.

I'm looking at purchasing (3) BCD996P2's. Does anyone have any feedback? Also, most importantly... Can I get a remote head setup for one?

Thanks in advance

Uniden never manufactured a remote head for the BCD996P2. The RH96 remote head worked on the previous models, but was discontinued years ago because of poor sales.

Whistler makes a TRX-2 with remote head does DMR P25 and NXDN present price app $500.00
Whistler makes a WS1098 with remote head that does DMR and P25 app $400.00
But neither scanner works well in the simulcast areas.
We are you and what is your target area.

There was a post on another thread where someone got the the remote head to work with newer scanner of the 996P2 variety. But it involves extra circuits. The first two Uniden Home Patrols are about the size as a remote head. The Whistler TRX-2 mobile scanner has a detachable head.

Monmouth County, NJ. I have no idea if I have simulcast areas or not TBH.

How are the Whistler scanners? I have always used Uniden.

They are not that bad they decode and track P25 systems well DMR and NXDN systems they scan the voice channels and decode good just do not track by control channel. They have a frontend overload problem if you are close to a cell tower or other strong transmitter TV FM PAGING ect. Simulcast is 2 or more sites with the same exact frequencies transmitting at the same time. You can ask in the NJ forum and check out the RR DATABASE in the county P25 system DE equals Digital and ENCRYPTION and a plain D is Digital only. The TRX-2 looks like it will work in your area plus I see DMR and NXDN and ANALOG all 4 in your area. Still I would ask in the NJ FORUM. The Whistler remote cable is a cat5 cable you would also need to run a ext speaker and cable.

We were able to successfully use an RH96 with a BCD996P2, read all about it here: https://forums.radioreference.com/threads/rh96-on-a-bcd996p2-yep.381622/

First off you need an RH-96, they are discontinued but occasionally pop up on the used market. Second you need to build and program the converter. It works but requires some work to do it. Kudos to Ric Plummer for coming up with this!
