I installed the virtual serial drivers on my Dell laptop using Dells driver support.
I was then able to install firmware update :)
I was also able to load the scanner frequencies that we added to the scanner manually with freescan as a test. I was even able to view the scanner gui on my computer. Then everything went to .... with no change to anything. Now the scanner is not connecting to my computer again! Help?

Using FreeSCAN, try this: Scanner tab > Control Scanner > COM Port Setup > Start Auto. It should Auto Detect your scanner.

Go into Windows control panel and the device manager. There you'll have a tree with all the hardware and look for the Ports (COM and LPT) row and open that up and you should see what com port the driver are using. You can right click on it and select properties and change the com port. Try to set it to values between 3-8. It might warn about the port number being in use but ignore that warning as it only tells you that it already has another driver installed to that port number.

I am having this issue with my 996P2 as well, I have tried several driver installs and while it will work with Scancat I cannot upload or modify from ARC anymore. Aside from multiple driver installs I am having this issue with Windows 10 & Windows 7.

Make sure you didn't turn on control channel output. This is a function that would send raw data to apps like UniTrunker. It's on the XT scanners, and I suspect on the P2 as well. You can check this in Settings > Set C - Ch output on the scanner.

Just a WAG that a lot of folks forget

I only know that with FreeScan I always have to auto scan for port access. If your software has auto scan you could try that.

Recently had difficult as well. Lowering the baud rate to 19200 worked. As always you need to click the COM box to right of Auto and select Start Auto.
