I never had a Uniden to know how the squelch, My RadioShack Pro-2015 the knob went further before the static and the Pro-197 is 55% before static
Volume and squelch controls used to be physical pots...now they are rotary encoders. Act the same, but no really! Thus the difference in the older radios and newe!

Would the Uniden be better than the Pro-197 on the squelch, I been looking at the Uniden but I can't find a picture online on where the static starts to compare the two

hit the hold button, type in 111.0 then hit hold again
'turn' the squelch until you hear the static and then back one more 'tick'.

that is the quickest way to listen to a frequency.

free scan does not work with with the 996 p2 .
i have tried it numerous times. tells me its not supported
My 996P2 does work with Freescan although I now use ProScan. While Freescan will work with the 996P2, Freescan does not support DMR, NXDN, etc.
Just tried Freescan with my 996P2 this morning to get this screenshot...

With exception of no support (as noted) for DMR and NXDN systems, FreeSCAN does work for basic programming with the P2 scanners, as well as the previous "T" and "XT" scanners.

On the other hand, ProScan works for all of those models, as well as even earlier Uniden scanners, and also the newer database scanners in the x36HP & SDS series. And it supports DMR as well as NXDN for the newer scanners that have the paid upgrades.

Here ya go…
It’s displayed on the screen…as the squelch control is an encoder and not an old fashioned pot I’ve seen the physical knob position vary…

Can you change the squelch with programming software, that's the first scanner I saw that tells the squelch position how many settings does it have

Actually that's what I used to think but I've been told an encoder would be too expensive, it's acutally a cheap rotary pulse switch which has been known to get dirty and fail over time with heavy use. But I never had one fail in my lifetime as I seldom need to adjust it.
