What causes the 996's alert led above the volume control to illuminate? I apologize, but I'm currently traveling, and unable to check the Tone-Out and GPS functions if it is one of these. Also have not received any weather alerts, so I can't rule that out yet either. I did try setting a channel to alert and a system to receive alert tones, but neither one of those did it. I also did a search on "alert" of the PDF manual, but didn't see it there either... unless I missed it.

Thanks,
Dewey

EDIT: Nevermind, just found it (http://www.radioreference.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44353). But thanks to all.

Here is a simple test that may work to verify the indicators:

Turn "ON" your 996 while simultaneously holding keys 0, 1 and 9.

Press the Squelch button repeatedly.

Does this light your "Alert" and "Close-Call" indicators?

This test works on the Remote Head, but I don't have a 996 to test it. There are very strong probabilities that it will also work on the 996.

Thanks Anabella. Since you have been so kind as to continuously share your findings with us concerning the 396's hidden keypresses, I tried your recommendation as soon as your post came in. Anyway, repeatedly pressing the squelch button only "confirmed" that it was the squelch button being pressed. However, repeatedly pressing the volume button did the trick!

Thanks again,
Dewey
