I ordered a power adapter from ebay for a used BCD996XT not sure if it's the right one

Why aren’t you sure? I know the description reads “Charger” when the more appropriate term for the 996XT would be “Power Supply”. But this same wall wart may be offered as both a power supply and a charger for other portable devices that use rechargable battery’s.

There are only a few variables that pertain to the device. Check that the following are proper…

1) physical size of plug on the end of the cord. Does it fit physically? (Don’t plug in the wall wart just yet… just see if the plug fits in the radio first.)

2) Check the polarity of the plug. Make sure it’s correct.

3) check the DC voltage and amp output of the wall wart. Only provide the amount of voltage listed in the spec sheet. A range is usually shown.

Probably better to buy from uniden scannermaster or any other reputable scanner distributor, instead of unbranded/cheap chinese junk off ebay which does not list output voltage and or mention if tip is plus or minus.

Yes, I owned both models many moons ago & swapped cabling all the time

It has full bars for about 10 minutes then no bars till I hitt menu and full bars again tried two antennas what could be the problem

You started asking about power supply for BCD996XT. Then moved onto programming cables between BCD15X and BCD996XT.

Now your saying "it" has full bars for a period of time, then nothing til menu is hit and asking if it could be antenna.

What is it?

Did you get a china power supply and damage the radio? Are we talking about a 996 or a 15?
