What cable are you using? Does it show up in Windows Device Manager as a valid COM port with a COM port number assigned to it?

I wouldn’t get too worked about what you can program, until your PC recognizes the scanner! Took me a lot of fumbling with freescan to see a 996P2!

I used the cablle that came with the scanner
If you are on a windows system you won't need a driver.

The factory USB cable that is used with that scanner (connected to the front programming port) is the Uniden USB-1 cable.

If that's the cable you have, and it's more than 10 or so years old (that scanner was released in 2009), it won't work with Windows 10.

The cable that came with the BCD996XT was not a USB cable, it was a RS232 serial cable that was connected directly to a serial port on the computer. The USB-1 cable had to be purchased separately.

did you download the special driver required for the 996p2 from the uniden web site and install it. once you do that the computer should see the scanner.

No it has a ferret on each end.
OK, that's not the factory USB-1 cable, I don't know where you would get a driver for that. Depending on how old it is, if that has a serial to USB chip in it, there were many cables on the market with counterfeit serial to USB chips in them that won't work anymore. Also, if that is a straight through USB cable with no serial to USB chip in it, that won't work either. The BCD996XT uses RS232 serial communication on both the front and rear port.

This is a link to the Uniden USB-1 factory cable:

You can find usable cables on Amazon, but you have to be careful of the fake ones.

Others have said that this cable from Amazon works well (it has the serial to USB chip in the computer end):

Get your cable working first.... you don't even need to plug it into the scanner to get it working, just the computer. No software will "see" your scanner until you see a valid COM port number assigned to the cable in Windows Device Manager with no errors showing for that device.

If the OP has a BCD996P2 that cable he showed us in a previous post is not the correct one. The P2 uses a USB mini not the goofy mini serial in his photo. and you must use BC_VUP3 for the windows 10 box to talk to the scanner. I should be more specific that the BC_VUP3 is used to upgrade the firmware and not until after that would the two talk.

He corrected himself and said he did 🧐
-
No, he did not..... That was not the OP that made a correction on his scanner model.

Hornnumb2 is the OP.............. The OP stated that he has a BCD996XT.

rocky28965 made the correction to his post #5 thinking that the OP has a BCD996P2.
