So, what your saying is, You won't buy another one. There is still hope, Uniden still monitors the forums.

I have the same opinion about Uniden. I have been a long time Uniden product owner but after having owned the BC785, BC796, BCD396T & 996T, and finally the BCD396XT& 996XT radios and being stuck without further firmware support after just two years in hopes that I'll just shell out additional funds for their newest flagship model and then they can cease to support the older radios; well I don't think so...

I now own several GRE radios, the support from GRE is top notch (you can actually talk live with someone and get support) and they still support their older firmware upgradeable products as well, for example the PSR-500 & PSR-600 which recently received an additional firmware update a few months back.

The Uniden's need correct, audio decode is awful at best on most systems unless you've got a 100% signal and it's a non-simulcast system (very few around these days in most major cities). The lack of actually site scanning ability is by far it's biggest flaw. Why can't the radio measure RSSI and then select the best site? Doesn't make sense given the architecture of the board and components.

I personally will never purchase a Uniden product moving forward. I like a company that listens and offers releases based on issues found and doesn't hold them internally until their hands are forced for a bug fix release.

Sorry Uniden, you guys dropped the ball here and it's a shame because you've got some great features locked up inside these BCD396XT/996XT scanners; I just wish you could have built on the platform.

"Uniden, you're a great conventional scanner but your lack of support and enhancements is driving longtime customers away for good... If there are no further enhancements to the BCD396XT/996XT line of radios; I personally will never purchase another Uniden product moving forward."

I would like to second that.

I agree. Due to my experience with my 396XT, I have no faith in Unidens ability to build a scanner (now or in the future) that can decode digital properly.

Most of the digital in my area I listen to I use my GRE600, there are some things that the Uniden does that I like, but, I do wish the digital decode was better and get my 3-4 second delay back. I'm waiting to see what the next GRE looks like, the HP1E won't do P25 phase ll, so maybe the next GRE base will and be more like a updated 600 with that addition and more.

I have no connection with any scanner manufacturer, distributor or dealer. My observations are merely as a radio engineer (senior member IEEE). The only RS scanner I still have is my trusty 2006 with a faded out display. I have a BCD 996T, 996XT, 396T,796, 785D, two HP-1 EE and an ICOM M700 for HF. In November 2010, exactly one year ago this week, I purchased a GRE 500. I found it difficult to use even with the factory recommended software (since this was a private recommendation, not an official one, I will not mention the name of the package). Last week I sold it, practically unused and got my second HP-1 EE. MY 'local' APCO P-25 700 MHz trunking site less than 4 miles from me, I find no difference in the decoding 'sound' between the GRE and the Unidens. They all sound 'oddly artificial' to someone like me who grew up with wideband FM.

If there is one brand I Will be hesitant about in the future it is GRE.

Good for you with no problems with your Uniden scanners, this thread is about Uniden XT model scanners. Looking for upgrades/fixes/additions.

What is this thread about again?

The quotation you make of my contribution is one I made an hour or so after your posting to which I was referring, your comment was entirely about GRE and the HP-1, you made no reference to improvements to XT scanners. I was elaborating on your own comment. Seems odd that you call me to task for being Off Topic when I was commenting on your post...

What is it you expect Uniden to do in response to "reading this thread"?

Work on the problems that the XT models are having, if you read the thread you'll see what has been requested.

Hi all,

New person here interested in getting his first scanner. Have been doing research which led me to a short list that includes the 396 or 996XT. Will be watching this thread with interest as now a shadow of doubt has crept in. Back in research mode (aka Analysis Paralysis).

Cheers!

Just saw the other thread about a "new" digital handheld coming in 2012. We know what that means for the 396xt.

Read the thread completely. This new scanner is for austria. Here is a member comment:

Indeed. This has been discussed recently before but this announcement is
NOT for the US Market. Uniden Australia is separate from Uniden America
and announcements for Uniden Australia have NOTHING to do with announcements
here in the US.

But, like any company I am sure Uniden America is hard at work on stuff for the
future.
