So, what your saying is, You won't buy another one. There is still hope, Uniden still monitors the forums.
I have the same opinion about Uniden. I have been a long time Uniden product owner but after having owned the BC785, BC796, BCD396T & 996T, and finally the BCD396XT& 996XT radios and being stuck without further firmware support after just two years in hopes that I'll just shell out additional funds for their newest flagship model and then they can cease to support the older radios; well I don't think so...
I now own several GRE radios, the support from GRE is top notch (you can actually talk live with someone and get support) and they still support their older firmware upgradeable products as well, for example the PSR-500 & PSR-600 which recently received an additional firmware update a few months back.
The Uniden's need correct, audio decode is awful at best on most systems unless you've got a 100% signal and it's a non-simulcast system (very few around these days in most major cities). The lack of actually site scanning ability is by far it's biggest flaw. Why can't the radio measure RSSI and then select the best site? Doesn't make sense given the architecture of the board and components.
I personally will never purchase a Uniden product moving forward. I like a company that listens and offers releases based on issues found and doesn't hold them internally until their hands are forced for a bug fix release.
Sorry Uniden, you guys dropped the ball here and it's a shame because you've got some great features locked up inside these BCD396XT/996XT scanners; I just wish you could have built on the platform.
