This is really just a testimonial. I'm a casual hobbyist and I've had a BCT15X that has served me well for years but my local town switched to all digital a while ago and I became frustrated at hearing locations around me but not my local guys. I finally opened my wallet and got a BCD992P2 that arrived yesterday. I've been getting it programmed up and testing it and WOW, turns out I've been missing a lot more than I realized. So far I'm loving it! It's a very solid unit, thinking about an external antenna but it doesn't seem like I'll even need that.

Welcome to Radio Reference and congrats on the BCD996P2, it's a great scanner. If you haven't already seen this, it's a good reference source for your new scanner:

If you are looking for software to program and control/remote access your scanner, consider ProScan... it's a fantastic program with more features that any other software out there:

And.... if you haven't already purchased upgrades for NXDN, DMR, or ProVoice (very few agencies using ProVoice anymore) and you are considering getting any of them, be sure to register your scanner and purchase the upgrades directly from Uniden at a much cheaper price than dealers will charge.

It's a very easy process to install the upgrades yourself.... Uniden will issue digital keys that you just enter into the scanner through the on-screen menu system.

Register and purchase upgrades at:

The upgrade cost directly from Uniden is:

DMR = $60
NXDN = $50
ProVoice = $50

Have fun!

Thanks for the tips. I've been using the ProScan (still in my 30 day trial) and the feature set is really quite impressive although I'm finding it almost a little too overwhelming. In my working days I use to install and program large enterprise PBX systems so I'm certainly no luddite but I'm leaning towards just sticking with FreeScan; simple easy to manage interface. I will take a look at the easier to read manual though, the one that came with it is starting to make my old brain hurt a bit.

Freescan is definitely an easy to use interface, but it doesn't support the newer DMR and NXDN systems out there now.

For your scanner, you can use also use ARC-XT or Proscan software. Both are excellent programs, support DMR and NXDN. and have a free trial period to determine which one you like better. I use Butel ARC-XT Basic to program my BCD396XT, BCD996XT's, BCD325P2, and BCD996P2. It also supports your BCT15X.
