Beginner with a Yupiteru-7500 and not much luck

Hi everyone, first time posting.

Got a Yupiteru MVT 7500 for christmas--an odd gift, but I have odd family. Its almost all in Japanese, though I'm lookint at the MVT-7100 manual (available in English) and having some luck.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, maybe its the stock antenna is just wimpy? But I am going to places, looking up the frequencies which are used, and typing in the frequency. It *rarely* works. I can get NOAA's weather forecast, easy, and I can get FM music radio stations (i.e. 101.1).

I went to truck stops and tried CB frequencies--no luck. I went to Portland airport and listned--barely got a little action from a baggage handler. Exciting, but I want to hear the tower!

Anyone feel like helping a newbie out?
