There are some things that only come around once in a lifetime. I have been an aviation monitoring aficionado since the age of 15. My very first experience was going to a local airport with my family and watching the jets takeoff and land. One day while sitting there watching all the action, a man pulled up, stepped out of his car and turned on a radio that he had which I later found out he was using to monitor aviation radio traffic. I remember asking the man what was the name of the radio. He said.” This is a Bendix King brand model KX – 99..”
All I remember is how beautiful the audio came in and how awesome I thought it was to be able to listen to all the communication. I have always wanted to buy this radio, but did not find one in good condition at the time I was looking. I decided to turn to scanners to listen to aviation traffic. Fast-forward to today. While at a medical appointment, I was going through Facebook marketplace on the local side here in Connecticut. I wasn’t looking for anything specific, just something that I could buy or maybe fix up and then resell. Lo and behold there it was, a Bendix King KX 99. It was a lady selling it and she was only asking $60. I thought.” that’s not a bad price.”. I reached out to her and inquired about the radio.. She said that a friend of theirs sold the plane that he owned and gave them this Bendix king 99 so they could listen to their NASCAR races which they are big fans of.. Now if you are not laughing at this point, read what I just said again and let that sink in.😂 I explained to her that this was an aviation radio, and that it would be totally useless in a NASCAR circuit race. I asked her if the radio would turn on. She said I tried plugging it in and turning it on after a few minutes, but it did not turn on. Now, most of you know that when these nicad battery packs die, sometimes they won’t even turn on even if plugged in. I said to her. “ well if it doesn’t turn on, it, probably needs a brand new battery pack and they’re not cheap, what is the least you would take for the radio as is?” to make a long story short, I ended up paying $25.. She was local and only a 20 minute drive from my house.. when I showed up to our meeting place and she showed me the radio, I did all I could not to show in my expression the joy I felt. This thing has been in a closet stored, and has not been touched by human hands in over 20 years according to the seller.. As the pictures show, it is in pristine condition. It included the carrying loop and the antenna. It even has, as you can see, the rubber covers that go over the BNC connector and the other ports. The lady assured me that the radio worked when the friend gave it to them after he sold his plane and got out of the aviation realm.. So, in closing, I have my childhood desired radio, in mint condition, ready to take to all my aviation monitoring journeys. I love my BC125AT, but there is no audio like the audio coming from a true aviation portable.
Needless to say, I am a happy camper guys!!!!!!!!😎

If anyone knows, when the original nicad battery dies, should the radio turn on if a wall adapter is plugged in? I have taken out the pack, radio does not come on via AC adapter. With the pack on, I get a slight noise when I turn it on but no display.
I’m not sure if I just need a new battery or what.

Got a close frind that has one of those. He is a pilot of just about everything and takes it with him. The only one I ever saw.
His radio, he had a Li-ion batery pack made for it. For sure, your NiCd pack is gone.
You got a mind boggling deal.

So; great buy. But you left me wondering if the radio works now with the AC plugged in?? Do you have to have the battery pack installed for the radio to work with the AC plugged in??

Great find. The NiCads are probably shot but you'd be surprised, I've had 30 year old NIcads spring to life though nowhere near the original rated capacity and self-discharge was high, like take it off the charger today and don't use it and tomorrow it's dead.

Batteries America sells a NiMH 2700mah pack for $69. Probably a good investment if you are going to make this a daily driver.

Back when I was flying I purchased a brand new KX-99 and carried it in my flight case as a backup. I never had to use in that scenario, but it was routinely handy on the ramp for checking weather, filing flight plans, monitoring traffic, etc. I gave it to my brother 25 years ago, and it's still going strong.

I left the radio charging for 12-14 hours. It fired right up without the need for a charger. Unfortunately, the nicads are on their way out. Got about 15 minutes before the beeping started

Yes, I saw that. I plan on getting it when I get a chance. I struck and even SWEETER deal than this one on a pair of IC-A3 aviation portables. I got this one after winning a bid on a pair of them used for $15. Yes, $15 for 2 Icom IC-A3 portables. One was good as you can see. The other is only good for parts. It’s missing knobs and the screen is scratched. But they both work well and each came with a battery. So the KX will take a back seat to the A6. How do I keep running into these hot deals? LOL..

That looks suspiciously similar to the Icom H-16/U-16 chassis. Different keypad and screen,, but the layout on the top and the belt clip have a striking resemblance. Is the battery removable? Could you take better lighted photos?

Suspiciously similar or not, I assure you it’s a KX99. Icom copied the chassis design with the making of the H-16. Here you go.

I got my KX-99 off a pile of crap on a tarp at Dayton for $3. I still prefer the Icom IC-A21.

I've had mine for 20+ yrs, don't remember where I got it but it was free. I prefer the PRC-6809s I had or the PRC-113 I have now. They are bigger but very satisfying to use.
I just wish the 113 had a means to scan at least a few channels.

They also make AA packs that look just like the nicd batteries. That's what I use for mine.

Good idea. I’ll look into it. I always prefer the standard packs, but for $70 a battery, I’ll try the AA packs first.
