Yes, they did. It was the Bergen County Crime Alert channel. Similar to Spen but just in Bergen County. I don't know when they stopped using it, been out of Bergen County for a number of years now.

In the land of make believe
37.38 was the channel to listen to many years ago, they were also on 37.10 and before that 1700am or so
They were the first PD to use radio - Bayonne seems to think they went on the air first - HA
Add to towns on or had 37.38 was FT Lee, and up towards West MIlford area! They also had what is called today a PSAP - they answered the phones for towns like Park Ridge , Hillsdale, and Lodi, Mahwah, Ho Ho Kus -mostly nights weekends/holidays - crime was alot less way back then

The current UHF came on line by the end of 1980's BUT , Nassue County NY also used some of the same UHF channels! they for a time shared the same LOW Band channels?!!
477.1875 was suppose to be a interoperability channel radios were given to all towns in the county for free! base station and a mobile and a mobile receiver, the recivers were too big the mobile went into only the local chiefs car - they did not want thier officers acting on or listening to the county with out permission! and when the chief went home nobody had access to it - some even unplug the base station - they did not want to hear the 'problems' of the RT 46 , 4 towns,
the sheriff which used VHF 154.xxx in the jail went to the UHF by 1983 or so and thier Transportation units needed another channel so by about 1989 [+/ - ] moved over to the 477.1875 alert channel and that drove off the remaining towns who tried to use the freq.

that the short version

the new version is they are upgrading to the 21 century its is digital and will be mostly encrypted - as heard recently on the new talk grops showing up 201 303, 306 401 etc this past week,

I work for Ramapo PD, and years ago we were on 37.18. Spring Valley village was on 37.40 except when the base station went down. They would borrow a 37.18 radio from Mahwah PD to use while theirs was out for repair. It was extremely old as you could hear the dynamotor spinning up as the dispatcher transmitted. I asked my boss why Mahwah had such an old radio and was told that in the early 1950's they shared 37.18 with Rockland County. When it got too busy, they, along with Ramsey acquired 37.08. I uess they kept the old radio lying around.

I finally was able to pick up 472.7125 from my location and immediately ran Pro96Com on it. I noticed that the decoder is reporting TDMA packets being transmitted on the control channel. It looks like there is a good chance that the Bergen County Trunk System is P25 Phase II TDMA and therefore there is a chance that we won't be able to hear the talkgroups in the future.

Bad News For Scanner Buffs

Word from a reliable source directly involved in implementation of the new Bergen County system is that ALL talk groups in the new system will be encrypted.

Repeat: ALL TALK GROUPS (including Roads Division, Senior Transportation, Police, EMS, Prosecutor, Jails, etc.) will be fully encrypted. Nothing will be broadcast in the clear; absolutely nothing.

Word also received that Lodi PD will be the first local police department to be incorporated into the system.

Coverage testing is complete; the system reportedly offers 95% reliability on street portable coverage throughout the County. No information available at this time regarding the % reliability of in building coverage.

I have heard the same also. I was waiting for someone else to post it. Looks like Nassau County NY is also doing the same...

So much for digital scanners. You spend the money on them and then you get nothing. I think it is a waste of money sometimes. In this case it is.

IMO they should have set the system up the way Morris County did. Every municipal agency was provided with radios to operate on the system. They setup their system thinking ahead with inter-operability unlike BCPD. How many local towns are going to have the money to jump on the system?, especially Volunteer agencies. Most volunteer groups are already stretched on money. They are not gonna have the spare cash to buy digital radios with Encryption modules or flashed to work with encryption. They have enough trouble getting funds to buy new ambulances etc. Many towns have switched to the county in Morris County for dispatching... I don't think you are gonna see much of that take place in Bergen County, with the exception of the few towns they are already dispatching. When someone looks to encrypt an entire system to lockout listeners and agencies who have scanners, one has to wonder what they are trying to hide. They are not a 3 letter agency that deals with national security matters. There is no problem encrypting sensitive talkgroups, most people would not argue against that. But to encrypt an entire system at taxpayers expense is a little over the top.

Hmm... have you seen the apparatus in Bergen County? I think they could swing a few radios if they felt the need was strong enough.

I more or less meant most Volunteer EMS agencies... Not so much Fire. Most FD Apparatus is paid for by the town. Not usually so with EMS, many rely on donations. Some have rigs purchased by towns, but many are struggling to get members and stay afloat...

Bergen County Trunked - Encryption

About 2 years ago I posted a thread here at RR about encryption. The thread has been closed because this subject can and discussion can go on forever. Nor is it my desire here to resurrect the 'encryption' here in this thread. Just go to the old thread and read for yourself. Some have thought my post was "way out there" but you have to make up your own mind on this. So the link to this 'old' thread is posted here: http://forums.radioreference.com/ge...encryption-killing-killed-scanning-hobby.html
Is it all coming true? Some food for thought and thanks for reading:roll:.
Again no need to resurrect this subject here.

I have decided to no longer update Bergenscanner.com with regards to the county. What's the po-int? _I'm sure someone ,will find the talkgroups and they'll- eve8ntually post them in the database, but I'm not wasting my energy. I also heard from someone in the county and one of the reasons why they are encrypting is because they are tired of the Internet feeds being so accessible. Before for we get into a flame war, don't shoot the messenger

Today I heard what I think is the Bergen County Senior Transport Buses on the system in digital. They used to be on 478.587 analog. Now they are on now. The radios are in the clear. Why would they want to encrypt the senior buses?? I guess maybe encryption is the future. Any opinions??? The drivers of the buses still had to repeat there messages a couple times, even on the digital P25. I still think digital is not that great. If encrypted, there goes the hobby.

I just want to ask a question. Isn't encryption going to backfire in a way because the press wont be able to cover stories and when the police need the press they might not be there for them. I foresee a lawsuit somewhere soon from the press to deter departments from encrypting the radios.Thats just my opinion.

I guess I'll believe it when I see it. I wonder if the source (not the poster) understands the difference between encryption, digital and those digital formats that just can't be scanned (not really encrypted).

No flame, just a question.
