A source within the Bergen County Police Department tells me this, ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT will be encrypted. Other Units such as County EMS and the dog catcher will not be. EMS today was heard on BCPD Channel 9.

Other sources within that same organization, and from the vendor installing the system, are reporting that EVERYTHING will be encrypted, including EMS, Public Works, Fire, Animal Control, etc. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

They are encrypted transmissions on BCPD CH 1 477.162!!! It sounds terrible. What a shame. I spent money on digital scanners for nothing. Waste of money. What does everyone think about this??

Now in today's paper NYPOST an article reporting that a retired NYPD Sgt. who is a "meddler" constantly showing up at scenes listening to a scanner. He is reported as the person who said GUN when the Nassau Co. cop showed up afterwards with a long gun over his back. The MTA cop ended up fatally shooting the Nassau Co. cop. A terrible tragedy. However you know this is ANOTHER reason for encryption and expect it to come to a lot of systems.

I do understand. BUT.....for us scanner buffs, it Really stinks to not be able to hear what is going on. I always behave while listening to the scanner. It is fun to listen In. I guess we have no control over what happens.

Police OEM Tg's are encrypted - BUT during the Meadowlands drill, when my squad got back said they carry APX dualband radios - the EMS and Fire coordinators tg's were in the clear - they had the VTACS/UTACS in the same radio as the trunk system! wow and they love em?!! and are mixed that no one can hear them (PD) but that they have several channels for county wide to local towns, MICOM guys were over heard talking to the OEM PD guy and said that thier county radio base should (hope fully) be in by end of month

I thought the reason for the BCPD to build this new system was to make communication easier with other towns during major disasters like the 05' teterboro plane crash that crossed rt. 46 and crashed into the strawberry warehouse, that's what they told us and used the event as a reason to push for the new system but i don't see this system helping with communications at all, unless all towns go on the system and have their own tg, that way, responding county units can hop on to the town id's but that won't happen any time soon. It's all about having the newest toys.

wondered the same thing, but a few months ago they relicense 155.55 word has it that it will be used as a inter county 'spen' type channel with patch to the trunk system, and there are talk groups for the towns to join up, as mentioned by a previous post; towns may not want to spend $$ to go narrow band and the county has told ALL towns that thay can come on the system . Their other 477.2875 channel will also be for towns in UHF range for interagency with patch-cross patch. Closter is moving all PD/FD over to County dispatch in the next few months, will be keeping the vhf - for now which the county has already, until they buy narrowband trunk radios in a year or so

Now that this system has come alive - I am rx 8 encrypted talk groups cant tell who or what is using the groups. seems everyone here has there own sources - i get mine at the golf courses - there are towns that wont go- refused to go on the system, they say that being dispatch from so FARR away is not in thier best interest.
Morris county cant keep them away; towns are steping over each other to get on, even the Fire service, moving as fast as they can to go trunking by the county??
in Bergen it is so opposite ? must be the water; while pasing RiverVale/Old tappanarea they are no longer digital? heard they gave up on it ? didnt work huh? guess I'll delete the bergen system

All i can hear on the Bergen system is the Senior Bus system and a dog catcher. The Police are in stealth mode now. The county police no longer have my support. Deleting the system from my scanners.

I would have to say that it chalks-up to the quality of the system that Morris built, and the carefully staged migration of the users off of their conventional channels (as to not cause a serious overload).

I've heard others here in the past talk about how crazy crap is in Bergen County - what's it, 68 separate municipalities & 70 police agencies in a county that's no bigger than Somerset or Middlesex? That's a true testament to 'home rule' gone totally wrong up there...

Try Westchester, it took over 30 years to get a consolidated fire dispatch, but the PD's refuse to give up their territories. In the Village of Pleasantville there are 4 police departments that cover a 1 square mile area. At least Ossining shows some promise buy switching to the County PD, but that was financial rather than consolidation. The department was on the way out because of budget cuts, this was their way of keeping their jobs, and putting the cost on the rest of the County taxpayers. BTW has anybody made any inquiries as to why the ENC of all services, even NYC doesn't do that, and they are more likely to have a terrorist incident than a bedroom community.

I heard Bergen Co Prosecutor's in the clear today on UTAC4. They were tailing someone when they were asked to identify and asked if they were part of the exercise they said they were not.

I guess they didn't get the memo they could encrypt something that really should have been encrypted or maybe all the park security guards had tied up the talk groups.

Why?? Years of doughnut jokes, years of second guessingthe cops, posting on going operations, that's some of the reasons. More encryption is on the way like it or not.
BTW NYC doesn't put sensitive stuff on the radio.

Donut jokes? Really?

That's a reason to go to encryption?

Hmm....

....and will LODI PD/FD give up the channels the County gave them now that they wont be going on the system - Mayor says he cant afford to go to County Dispatch??
As the Closter area group has now fully switch over on the County VHF side could they get the frequencies ?

Yeah them BC cops can't take a joke.... Had to stop everyone from making fun of them, so they had to get their new super secret squirrel radio system.

Yes, that is one of the many reasons. If you were the CEO of your company and people were making fun of your people and you have real security issues wouldn't you think about the encryption? Why do you think some taxi's are encrypted? Usually only single phase voice inversion.

I know you are for the "people" and would say I want everyone to hear everything right?

Again the ret. Sgt. in Nassau, although further investigation shows that it was not his fault but possibly the MTA cops. Narcotics and special ops have been encrypted or on phones and nextel for years. Is that wrong? Should you be allowed to listen to everything? Secret Service is encrypted, Coast Guard is encrypted.

I don't see anything in the Constitution or local laws saying there is a right to listen to a scanner.

Rivervale PD has had an encrypted channel for years.

River Vale in Bergen County IS NOT ENCRYPTED. Old Tappan, which shares 155.1900 is testing digital modes. They also have the ability to do voice inversion on 154,9500
