We had a very knowledgeable fellow from the Berrien County Sheriff's Department talk to our ham radio club last night.

The question about encrypting came up. He stated that probably the only transmissions that will normally be encrypted are the narcotics transmissions. He doubted very much if the regular routine dispatching, etc. for be encrypted.

By the way, he demonstrated one of the handheld radios and indicated that the radio was already encryption-capable. All he had to do was push a button.

Other than power and antenna height, you could say that the HT is more versatile than the base dispatch unit. He said that the County dispatch center has only 10-talkgroup capability, but the HT has 256.

In the future, once the SAFE-T TRS gets underway, Indiana will have the ability to talk to Michigan, and vice-a-versa. Especially, when Indiana upgrades to ASTRO 6.1 in late 2006, or of they can obtain the funding sooner through homeland security grants. However, in the meantime, they can make use of the conventional I-CALL and I-TAC channels to communicate with each other.
