I'm looking to get either a Uniden 536 or a Whistler TRX-2 scanner. I'm thinking the antenna most suited would be the Austin Ferret which seems to have mostly poor reviews or a triband or quad band antenna mostly covering low band (Not really critical) high band, UHF & 800 MHz mostly for fire service allocated frequencies, I don't need VHF or UHF airband or anything above 900 MHz. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Discones are not a viable option.

Personally, I'd stay away from the Ferret... had one; wasn't impressed. The Antennacraft ST-2 is a good all-around scanner antenna, but they've been out of production since RS went belly-up. If you can find one for a reasonable price, grab it!

The only other maker of "scanner-specific" antennas that I know of is DPD Productions (link below). You can review their offerings to see if anything might work for you. I happen to own one of their ADS-B models and it seems to work well for me.

Good luck.
