I live in an area that has very little activity at 400Mhz but alot in the 150s and 800s. What would you suggest for an antenna for these two bands, using a RS pro-160. I currently have a twinlead and a pipe j-pole but neither one does very well at 800. I have thought about making an antenna for 800 and using both but have read here that two ant. do not work well together. Thanks for any advice.

Given the ranges you are trying to scan, no one antenna is going to be a perfect solution. The best you can is a multi-band antenna and cross your fingers.

Another idea is to buy two antennas, one for VHF and one for 800MHz, then pick up a cheap scanner to use on VHF only. Prices have come down so much on those scanners, that they are almost being given away sometimes.

I have a Radio Shack mag mount sitting on a filing cabinet indoors, it's the multi-band antenna and meets my needs, including 800MHz, which really surprises me. VHF lo comes in booming too I might add.
