I would like to mount an external scanner antenna on my car (NMO Mount). What is the best cable that can be used for mobile use (RG58A/U, RG8X, Teflex, etc)?

Also, what is the best antenna that would do good on VHF-Hi, UHF, UHF-T, and 800Mhz?

Thanks!

The a multi-band scanner antenna will have OK performace on many bands, but not great on any single one. If you mostly listen to one certain band then get an antenna made for that band. But for a general scanning antenna, the Antenex ASCANC and ABSCANC that Chris is referring to work great.

Good old RG-58A/U stranded coax is what I would use for your mobile scanner antenna. No need for anything fancy for scanning applications.

I have Antenex MB8 all-brass NMO mounts on sale this month for $10, plus 10% with the RADIOREFERENCE coupon code.

Surf on over to http://shop.waltel.com and see what you need. Don't forget to enter RADIOREFERENCE for the coupon code on the top of the checkout page in order to get your 10% off!

PM, email, or call if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jeff

related question:

does anyone know if the trunk lid mini-mounts made by Antenex fit on the leading edge (towards cabin) of a CVPI trunk? If so, will the multiband antennas (ASCANC and ABSCANC) work/not hit roof when trunk is opened?

I kind of doubt that it will work on the front edge like that. However, I can send you an antenna and mount at no charge for you to try out. If it doesn't work then just send it back.

Let me know and I'll get them out to you.

Thanks!

Someone (not pointing a finger) told me he had pretty good luck with an AM/FM antenna multicoupler, such as: Multicoupler. Anyone else have experience with these? I'm not looking for the highest end solution, and stealth/antenna security (it won't get ripped off my patrol car) is pretty important. I listen to mostly trunked 800, so need decent performance thru that area. Otherwise, I have to run coax the length of the car (per previous posts), and I'm not sure I want to donate equipment to the County. However, if I do, I'll give you a ring, Jeff (thnx for the offer).

I've used a multicoupler before and it worked fine for local VHF and UHF signals with my car antenna. When I used it, there weren't any local 800Mhz systems, so i'm not sure how it would work. It did kill AM radio reception and the signal going to my scanner was less than what I could get with a mag mount or permanent mount antenna.

I've been told by others that tried a multicoupler that it didn't work for them at all, so YMMV.

I've had good luck with the 800Mhz radio shack rubber duck antenna, so much luck in fact that I may not install a dedicated 800Mhz antenna on my car.

I don't blame you for not wanting to donate to the county :)

Take care,

Warren

mobile antenna

ive used a larsen nmo-150 coil and a 49inch whip for my scanner install . it worked great for all the band's ive listened to . i installed the larsen TLM on my old ford which btw had the all steel lid so a good ground plain wasnt a problem . but my mobile was a uniden BC350A and it worked good for the surrounding counties . then i tested the antenna on my base which was 800 and it picked up every signal . so all in all i would go with a larsen nmo-150 with a 49 inch whip and a TLM .
