I was planning to solid mount it on 3/4" pipe just behind the spare tire with the base just above the top of the tire.

A GPS antenna anywhere above the roofline should be fine. I would put it on a much shorter pipe/mast, lower and a little further from the spare tire. I have a GPS puck antenna that is inside my SUV near a back side window and it receives fine. In a forest canopy my GPS suffers a bit because of that position, but on top somewhere is fine.

I was mounting it higher to put it above the tire. If the tire will create interference, I could take it all the way to the front of the roof and mount it much lower.

Do you think your tire will cause more interference with the antenna above the roofline versus my GPS puck inside under the roof of my vehicle? Myself and many other people use radios that have the GPS on top of a remote control head. Most people position that control head near the front of the dash and not necessarily above the dashboard. I don't have any problems with that GPS antenna either. My points are just food for thought based on my experience. Enjoy having fun with your build out.

Note: If I was transmitting to an Iridium satellite, then yes I would definitely have it away from the tire, or higher if I could not move it further away.

I agree on lowering the GPS antenna at least even or just below the spare tire. Would not want tree branches ect to snag the antenna.

Yeah, that's going to be a mess if you hit a low branch. It's not necessary. I'd put it somewhere else and keep it down low, or switch to a NMO type GPS antenna and be done with it.

Ok, here's an update on the build . . . permanent mounted the GPS antenna a little lower and forward of everything else on the roof. It should be fairly well protected yet has almost a clear 360 degree view of the sky.
