You guys have helped me before, now I ask for your help again. I use Windows Media Encoder to broadcast my scanner. I work for the Government and basically every port is blocked. So I cannot listen to my scanner at work. I remember someone suggested a port to use that was commonly open on most networks. I cant remember it though. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks a lot

Send it on Port 80

You need to broadcast your feed on port 80.. However make sure that nothing else on your home network is using it. Then point your work computer to your feed and it will stream.. That is how the MDFireFeeds.com servers get through firewalls. The company will not block the normal port for internet traffic.

Hope this helps.

I think it best, since you work for the Government that you discuss this with your System Administrator before doing anything, else you may violate some policy and find yourself out of work.

I shudder every time I see questions like this, and people give answers, not thinking of consequences. Business block ports all the time, for security purposes. By opening even 1 port, you give thousands of hackers a place to start hacking a system, and it may only be a matter of time before they can find an exploit and use it to their advantage. Port blocking is not designed to keep inside people from accessing the internet, but it is there to keep outsiders from accessing the internal network.

As a former Sysadmin, if I discovered something like this on my network I would be very cheesed off and would have no choice to report it to my manager, who would report to his manager, etc etc... Is it really worth your job to do something like this without consulting with your system administrator? Is listening to your scanner while at work, really that important? If you do it, then others may want the ability to do the same or something, opening a whole new mess for IT.

He's not suggesting anything that would comprimise the network security.
He's not suggesting anybody open any ports.
He's asking what port he can stream on so he can listen to it at work.

I have the exact same thing at my work. Almost everything but port 80 is blocked.

I stream my scanner to www.streamwebtown.com. It is free.
I can listen to it at work with no problem. No different than listening to my favorite radio station over the internet.

P.S. Scott's solution should work also...I just never managed to get that to work.
But he knows well of what he speaks.
