Best portable?

I have been using the PRO 95 for a few years and am wanting to upgrade. I like RS scanners, so what is the best available handheld available now? Also, I'm using Scancat Lite Plus for programming, with a new handheld is that still the best optio?

Analog or digital?

I have some PRO-95s, and I actually like them a lot. I also have some PRO-97s, and the things that make the '97s "better" than the '95s include; better backlight on the display, 16 characters per line instead of 12, CT/DC decoding, lighted keypad. I strongly recommend that you download WIN95 to program your PRO-95, it is free (www.starrsoft.com), check the Wiki. While what you're using is supposed to program the PRO-97, I strongly suggest you don't use it (check threads here for issues that have been reported and beat to death on the issue) and that you get WIN97 instead.

However, having said all that; any more a huge factor in determining what scanner works best for you has to do with where you are and what you want to monitor. Some areas have gone digital and neither of these scanners can decode the audio. The "similar" scanner, but digital, to those which I've mentioned here is the PRO-96. However that is now an old model and there are newer digital hand-helds.

Well after many thousands of dollars spent on this hobby,I am sure that this pro-106 will be the winner for me. If you are looking for both analog/digital capability,a sturdy unit and great memory capacity with object oriented programming then buy this unit. I think its a true winner!!!

Thanks for the advice. Does WIN95 work with Vista? I noticed on the site it appears to be rather old software. What is the benefit over Scancat? I've had not issues with Scancat.

The PSR-500 is an excellent scanner from GRE! Use with ARC500 and it is awesome!

Nevermind on this question. I downloaded it and it seems to work fine and I can already see some improvements over Scancat. It's certainly much more straight forward. I downloaded Win97 for my Pro-2055 as well and I really like that for that particular scanner.

If you want the BEST RadioShack scanner right now its the RS Pro-106
(and GRE family member the Psr-500).

As for the Pro-106 Be sure to call your local store first, as they may not have it in stock, or will have to order it for you.

However if you dont need digital, and want to save some cash you can go to a lower analog model.

The Pro-106 hands down is just like a real Moto XTS2500 or XTS5000 and goes back and forth analog/digtal
like a Moto and has 10 "zones" lists like a Moto. 380,700Mhz capable top of the line the Pro-106.

Called Radio Shack just now, (Oct 11th; 6:55pm EDT) 1-800-THE-SHACK

Salesman advises that Radio Shack Pro-106 has not been released. Has no further information.
Salesman advises Catalog # 20-106 does not exist.

Went to Radio Shack in Royal Oak, Michigan, today, Oct 11th. Salesman advises "No such item as Pro-106". Does not know what I am talking about.

No Pro-106 on The Radio Shack web site.

Anyone with further info on availablity for the Pro-106, please post.

being released in some stores and not others just yet.

You can get a PSR-500 shipped to your door in 2-3 days for $499. Pay no tax, plus you get adapter and pc cable ( a must have to program these scanners are almost impossible to manually program). Why run all over town to buy RS copy of the PSR. Just the economic side of reasoning.
