• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have a trip coming up, and may need to rent a car--hopefully an economical one. I generally do all my scanning with handhelds inside the car, antennas and all. If you have to rent a car with this in mind, what car would you choose?

I'm in the rental car business and have been driving a rental for 20 years.
Cuurently we carry 90% Chrysler/Dodge.
As the GM of a city I can have a pick of any car we carry.
Always go back to the Minivans..
Plenty of legroom, great gas mileage(although I haven't paid for gas in 20 years), and more importantly plenty of room for the gear.
I use vent mounts to hold my handhelds and there are fewer vents that will accomodate these due to the vents using veritical plastic pieces.
The Caravan, Grand Caravan, and Town and Country all still have the common vents.
Along with the fact our vans are loaded with DVD, Sirius radio, seat warmers and many have built in GPS.

I would think economy and safety would be far more important than will my scanner work.

any newer hyundi or ford

reason they have 3-4 power plug-ins all over the car

they also all have a stereo Aux in for mp3 player ...or scanner

they also get good gas

they also have a flop down seat so that you can run antenna cable out the trunk where your wires get less mangled then thru the door weather striping

they also are real cars (meaning not fiberglass trunks) so you mag mount.

(i rent a lot of cars and take 996/bct15/yeasu with me on most trips) its fun to get a rental and spend 10 min installing antennas.

I just had a 2008 Mazda 6 for two weeks. I had my mobile antenna magnetized to the back seat railing in the truck so it was well hidden and just had my radio pushed between the pax seat and center console. made an excellent temp mount and I picked up Fire/Police quite well for my putting around on 30 mpg.
