I have a friend who's looking to get into the hobby. Not yet a member of this site. She's looking to get a scanner for the Oakland county Macomb county area. .What scanner would be the best for her? Is there anyone in that area that would be willing to talk to her,on line about her needs? Is there anyone with a file for that region, for any radio?

I hope someone out there can help us!

You'd need a digital capable scanner as all public safety in Macomb county is P25 trunked, Oakland county is slowly (I mean for the past several years but glitches perennially keep stopping any progress) switching to an unmonitorable system, but the county sheriff and some other stuff is still on an analog 800Mhz trunking system.

As the others have said, go with a digital scanner, GRE/Uniden doesn't really matter. The best one is which ever your friend finds that works best for them. Ether way, I'd also recommend getting one of the many programming software packages out there, it not only decreases the learning curve, but also can allow for recording, streaming over the internet, etc. As for files, I've got a file for Oakland County using a GRE PSR500 programmed with WIN500.:p
