Sorry I have to butt in on this forum but I need some help A.S.A.P. I'm finally breaking out of the analog jail and I need some help deciding what digital handheld to buy? I've searched the forums on what is the best digital scanner to buy but the discussion was on scanners that are now outdated by the 396XT/996XT. I'm sure that you gentlemen can give me some tips since you probably have tried a wide variety of scanners already. I'm leaning toward the 396XT because of the ability to upgrade firmware etc. and the fact that I'm a real Uniden at heart. But I'm definitely willing to change my mind over to a GRE or PRO. I'll be monitoring MPSCS, MSP, Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties (APCO-25), and possibly Allegan County (EDACS). Let me know what you think and thanks for the help!

Either one will work, reception is about the same, so look at the options YOU want and go from there.

I really like the 396XT's options but I don't want to give up on the GRE-500's decoding accuracy and sound quality. Basically I guess I'd like to know if those particular aspects of the GRE are so much better than the Uniden's that it's worth giving up all the Uniden's sweet options.

I like the Pro-106 as well. Ive tried the 106, and the bearcats, and i found the 106 was the best (In my opinion) because once you read the manual through, its fairly simple to program. I didnt have the same success with Bearcats... But hey, they are all good scanners. Either way, youll be able to scan what you want.

Just got the BCD396XT and I'm VERY impressed. Now I just have to program it (way easier said than done). I have Freescan so it shouldn't be too hard.

Pro-197 Programming

I have been using scanner since back in the days of the old Robyn crystal sets, but for some reason I cannot get my new PRO-197 to work on this TRS. I have programmed it using RR’s database and WIN500 software. I successfully programmed my PRO-2096 and yet my new 197 just sits looking at me, unable to utter a sound from this digital system.

Anyone have any ideas what I am doing wrong?
