I can just use the 5v from USB port to the Bias-T and a long coax feed up to the antenna box as designed and forget about a long USB cable?
That would be the best solution. In the bias-T box there's a potentiometer to adjust the RF signal level to the receiver. If you use a simple receiver that might overload easily in its front end, or the opposite that all signals are weak, you can then adjust that potentiometer for best operation with the receiver you are currently using and will probably also depend on the frequency band.
