Best way to program an I-SCAN

Greetings all ! I just picked up up a Radioshack Pro-18 Digital Iscan, and am looking for the best method to get it setup to pickup the most frequencies in my area. I'm in Greenwood,Nova Scotia, and am hoping to be able to tune into the local military base, rcmp, fire and ambulance. I'm not sure exactly what I need in order to get all those frequencies on to the I-scan. Being a newbie, I'm starting to get on to the terminology and technology, but could use a litte guidance when it comes to picking the best options from the radioreference website.
